Christ the King Catholic Church and School is a Roman Catholic parish and educational institution located in Daphne, Alabama, in the United States.
Established in 1937, the parish operates under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mobile and includes a parochial school that opened in 1950.
History
[edit]Parish origins
[edit]Catholic worship in Daphne began in 1895, when land was acquired for the construction of the Church of the Assumption by Italian immigrants.
The first resident priest, Father Angelo Chiariglione, served from 1898 to 1909.
On October 24, 1937, Bishop Thomas J. Toolen of Mobile blessed the cornerstone of a new church building and formally established Christ the King Parish.[1]
The original church building remains in use today as "Assumption Hall" for parish events and ministry gatherings.
School establishment
[edit]Christ the King Catholic School opened on September 5, 1950, under the leadership of Father Denis Gray.
It began with four classrooms, 122 students in grades 1–8, and was staffed by four Sisters of Loretto.[2]
The first graduating class included nine students.
In 1972, five Presentation Sisters from Ireland joined the faculty and served until 2008.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the school expanded significantly with the addition of new classrooms, a computer lab, and a parish hall.
Preschool classes for Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 were introduced in 2017.
Church
[edit]The current church building was completed and dedicated on November 22, 1993, the Feast of Christ the King.
The parish offers daily and Sunday Masses, sacramental preparation, youth ministry, and adult faith formation programs.[1]
In March 2013, the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel was dedicated.
The chapel is maintained by over 400 parishioners who ensure continuous prayer throughout the week.[1]
School
[edit]Christ the King Catholic School provides education from preschool through 8th grade and follows a curriculum accredited by Cognia (formerly AdvancED).
Subjects include language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, religion, and enrichment programs such as art, music, physical education, and technology.[3]
Students participate in weekly Mass and service projects.
The school offers extracurricular activities including athletics, robotics, choir, drama, and student council.
Leadership
[edit]As of 2025, the pastor of Christ the King is Rev. Johnny Savoie, and the school principal is Jackie Garlock.[4]
Community involvement
[edit]Christ the King Parish supports both local and international outreach efforts, including food drives, prison ministry, and mission trips.
The parish hosts several annual events such as the Christ the King Festival and Lenten fish fries.
