Chris Marshall is a Yang style Taijiquan expert based in Shoreline, Washington, United States. He is the founder and instructor of the Shoreline Tai Chi[1] school. A prominent figure in the international Tai Chi community, Chris has traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia to participate in and compete at a broad range of Tai Chi events. He has won multiple medals in both taolu (form) and tuishou (push hands) at international competitions.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

Tai Chi lineage

Chris Marshall is a sixth-generation inheritor of Yang style Taijiquan with a lineage tracing back to the original founders of Yang Style Tai Chi:[13]

Chris also received instruction from other renowned Tai Chi masters such as Sam Tam and Fong Ha.[13]

Chris has played a significant role in documenting the competitive and combat applications of Tai Chi Chuan through YouTube videos and essays.[14] Before his efforts, raw footage of Tai Chi competitions was scarce, with most available videos consisting of carefully edited showcases.[15][16][17] His footage has shed light on how Tai Chi is performed under real pressure, across different rulesets, with varying levels of speed and intensity.

Chris has written, compiled and published a broad selection of free educational resources for the Tai Chi community,[18] including a comprehensive online Tai Chi dictionary of essential terms and concepts. He teaches regular Tai Chi classes,[19] workshops and seminars near Seattle, alongside online coaching.

Chris also hosts open mat sessions, providing martial artists of all styles with an opportunity to practice techniques, drill, and spar freely, in a safe and minimally structured environment.[20] He supports worldwide community events as a judge,[12] promoter,[20] participant[5][4][3], and competitor.[11][10][9][8][7][6][12][2]

Chris is the chair of the Tai Chi Instructors Alliance, a continuing Professional Development group.
