China Eastern Airlines Flight 586 was a scheduled flight from Shanghai to Beijing and then to Los Angeles. On September 10, 1998, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 passenger plane suffered a landing gear failure while performing this flight. After takeoff, the plane returned to Hongqiao International Airport and made an emergency landing. All people on board were safe. [1] This was the first incident of a civilian aircraft forced landing in China.
Events
[edit]At 7:38 p.m. on September 10, 1998, a China Eastern Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft with registration number B-2173 carrying 137 passengers and crew members took off from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport on flight MU586 and headed for Beijing Capital International Airport, and then flew to Los Angeles International Airport.
After the plane took off, Captain Ni Jieyang discovered that the indicator light on the front landing gear of the plane had not turned from red to off, indicating that it could not be retracted. When the plane rose to 900 meters, Ni Jieyang performed the landing gear retraction action again according to the checklist procedure, only to find that the red signal light was still on. The captain then notified the control tower at Hongqiao International Airport, and the tower agreed to allow the plane to return. At the same time, the chief flight attendant Xu Huanju who was busy in the cabin was notified. After confirming that the front landing gear had been retracted but the hydraulic system for lowering the landing gear seemed to be faulty, the crew attempted to lower the front landing gear in the air by first lowering the aircraft and then climbing, and then side sliding in a small radius, but failed to lower the front landing gear. With the approval of the ground control tower, Ni Jiexiang attempted to "release" the aircraft in the air. A series of rapid ascents, side slides, and steep turns were completed, but the centrifugal force was unable to "throw" the front wheel down. Afterwards, the captain instructed a mechanic, Zhao Yongliang, to check the condition of the landing gear. The mechanic wrapped himself in a rope and risked leaning out of the front landing gear door. He used an axe to hit the faulty part of the landing gear, but it did not loosen. The captain then touched down with the rear landing gear and tried to take off again, but there was still no response, so the plane had to make an emergency landing. [2]
At 10:10 p.m., the airport and the plane began preparations for the emergency landing. The flight attendants on board called on passengers to move as far as possible behind the tail of the plane, while the plane circled in the air to consume fuel. The airport runway was also sprayed with fire-retardant foam to reduce the chance of fire. At 11:07 p.m., the plane landed on a runway with fire-retardant foam sprayed on the front. The captain first let the rear landing gear touch the ground, and then the nose of the plane rubbed against the runway, dragging a trail of sparks with the ground. After sliding to 380 meters, the plane finally stopped. [3]
After the plane stopped, passengers left the plane one after another. Firefighters sprayed water on the plane to prevent fire and assisted passengers to leave the scene. Nine people were injured when leaving the plane because the escape slide leaked. [4]
Investigation and Aftermath
[edit]After more than a month of investigation, the authorities said the failure was caused by poor quality of the landing gear pins which broke, resulting in failure of the landing gear control. [2]
On the morning of October 30, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Civil Aviation Administration of China held a commendation meeting for China Eastern Airlines to celebrate, promote and award the B-2173 crew members. [5]
This was the first civilian aircraft emergency landing in China's history, and no one was killed. As a result, it was made into a movie called "Emergency Landing" by the Shanghai Film Studio in 1999. It is one of the few Asian and Chinese-language films with airplanes as the theme.
On November 2 of the same year, an Airbus A300B4-605R with the registration number B-2322, operating China Eastern Airlines Flight 515 from Shanghai to Osaka, had its front landing gear left wheel fall off after takeoff. The plane made an emergency landing at Hongqiao Airport. Fortunately, none of the 87 passengers and 15 crew members on board were injured. [6][7]
Flight MU586 was later changed to a non-stop flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai Pudong International Airport, and the aircraft model was also changed to Boeing 777-300ER. [8]
The B-2173 passenger aircraft was converted into a cargo plane in 2000 and belonged to China Cargo Airlines from 2005. It was transferred to Sky Lease Cargo in 2010 and its registration number was changed to N952AR. The aircraft was dismantled and scrapped at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in October 2017.
