Chimmer (also known as Tsimer) is a village in the Noorabad tehsil of Kulgam district Jammu and Kashmir India.The population of chimmer noorabad is estimated around 19,500 (as of 2025).The village is known mainly for the shrine of Sheikh‑ul‑Alam (RA) as well as horticulture and livestock related economic activity..[1]

History and Spiritual Legacy

Chimmer hosts the shrine of Sheikh‑ul‑Alam (RA) also known as Nund Rishi. The saint is believed to have spent several years in meditation in the area, and the shrine remains a local spiritual landmark.[2] The shrine receives the most visitors on Thursdays and Fridays and during annual devotional gatherings.[1]

Geography and Connectivity

Located in the foothills of the Pir Panjal range, Chimmer lies about 20 km from Kulgam. It has road links to Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, and Shopian supported by local bus and video coach services.[3]

Chimmer’s population is approximately 19500, with a literacy rate reportedly above 70% and many residents employed in government or public sector roles.The village has six education institutes,including Hanfia Noor‑ul‑Aloom Middle School,a high school,a primary school, and Madarsa Bagh‑e‑Sheikh‑ul‑Alam[4]

Economy

The local economy primarily revolves around: Horticulture apple and walnut cultivation that support many households.[5]

  • **Livestock** seasonal trading of animals and dairy products serves nearby districts and trading during eid ul adha
  • **Remittance-linked trade** some youths engage in shawl,dry fruit,and retail businesses outside Kashmir sending income home.[6]

Security and Recent Events

Chimmer has been mentioned in media reports due to militant-related encounters.In June July 2021 combined operations in the village resulted in the deaths of LeT-affiliated militants a matter confirmed by multiple news outlets.[7][8]
