Chicken nanban (Tori nanban, 鶏南蛮, or チキン南蛮) is a Japanese fried chicken dish that originated in the Kyushu region, particularly in Miyazaki Prefecture.
Overview
[edit]Chicken Nanban is a regional Japanese dish originating from Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region. It consists of deep-fried chicken that is marinated in a sweet and tangy vinegar-based sauce—known as "nanban sauce"—and typically topped with tartar sauce. The dish blends Western-style frying techniques with Japanese seasoning, creating a unique flavor profile that is both savory and refreshing.
Originally inspired by Portuguese and Western cuisine influences during the Nanban trade period (16th century), Chicken Nanban has become a staple of Kyushu cuisine and is now popular throughout Japan. It is often served as a teishoku (set meal) in restaurants, accompanied by rice and miso soup. While many variations exist, the defining features are the vinegar marinade and creamy tartar topping.[1]
Etymology
[edit]In Japan, Chicken Nanban is also known as "Tori Nanban" (鶏南蛮),[a] though the term "Chicken Nanban" is also commonly understood.
