Charles Washington Umphelby (5 September 1826 – 20 February 1892) was an English-born Australian merchant and military officer. He served as a captain in the Victorian Yeomanry from 1858 to 1862 and was the father of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Edward Ernest Umphelby, the highest-ranking Australian officer killed during the Second Boer War.
Early life
[edit]Umphelby was born on 5 September 1826 in Lambeth, Surrey, England, to Edward William Umphelby and Sarah Letts. He was christened on 4 February 1827 at Stockwell New Chapel Independent in Lambeth. He emigrated to Australia in 1842.
Career
[edit]In Australia, Umphelby established himself as a merchant. He served as a captain in the Victorian Yeomanry between 1858 and 1862.
Personal life
[edit]On 2 September 1852, Umphelby married Lydia Marzetti, daughter of J. Marzetti of Cawood, Tasmania, in Portland, Victoria. They had several children, including:
- Charles Edward Ernest Umphelby (1853–1900), who became a lieutenant colonel in the Victorian Permanent Artillery and was killed in action during the Second Boer War.
- Harold Marzetti Umphelby (1865–1937), who worked as an accountant in Melbourne.
- Thomas Frederick Umphelby (1855–1908)

- Maud Marzetti Umphelby
- Ethel Cath Marzetti Umphelby (c.1869–1970)
Death
[edit]Charles Washington Umphelby died on 20 February 1892 at Maydala, Rosedale, Victoria, Australia. He was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery in Parkville, Victoria.
