Chang Kuo‑wei (張國煒, born 6 September 1970), known in English as K. W. Chang, is a Taiwanese entrepreneur, commercial pilot, and aircraft maintenance professional. The fourth son of Evergreen Group founder Chang Yung-fa and his second wife, Lee Yu‑mei, he is best known as the founder and current chairman of Starlux Airlines.
Chang previously held leadership roles as chairman of EVA Air and UNI Air, and served as president and vice president within the Evergreen Group. He also served on the boards of Evergreen Marine, Evergreen International Storage & Transport, and Trade-Van Information Services.
He is the first airline chairman in Taiwan to hold both pilot and maintenance certifications for Boeing 777, Airbus A320 family, and Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.
Early career and Evergreen
[edit]Chang joined Evergreen Group in 1996, working across planning, maintenance, and flight operations before becoming general manager of EVA Air in 2005. Passionate about flying, he completed Boeing 777‑300ER first officer training in 2010 and earned his captain’s license from Taiwan’s Civil Aeronautics Administration in mid-January 2013.
On 1 September 2014, Chang was appointed vice president of Evergreen Group. Following founder Chang Yung‑fa’s passing in February 2016, Chang was briefly named president of Evergreen and chairman of EVA Air on 18 February 2016. However, within days, the group scrapped these roles amid internal succession disputes, and Chang was removed as chair of both Evergreen’s management and EVA Air by 11 March 2016.
Founding Starlux Airlines
[edit]On 30 November 2016, Chang formally registered Starlux Airlines, appointing former EVA Air general manager Zheng Chuan‑yi as vice chairman. The airline received its air operator certificate and began operations in late January 2020. The first A321neo arrived in October 2019, personally piloted by Chang; he also piloted the second airframe and subsequent A350‑900 deliveries, including a flight from France in December 2024.
UNI Air and Recent Expansion
[edit]Chang served as chairman of UNI Air from February to September 2022. Under his leadership, Starlux opened new international routes, including nonstop flights from Phoenix to Taipei in early 2025.
Personal life and recognition
[edit]Chang is married to Yeh Shu‑wen since 2006 and has two sons from his two marriages. He was awarded the Knight of the French Legion of Honour in January 2021.
