Cardiff East railway station is a proposed station in the eastern part of Cardiff, Wales, located near Newport Road. It forms part of a wider scheme to improve rail connectivity between Cardiff Central and Severn Tunnel Junction as part of the South Wales Metro programme.

Overview

[edit]

The station is one of five new stations proposed by Transport for Wales to enhance rail access in South East Wales. The other proposed stations are Newport West, Somerton, Llanwern, and Magor and Undy.[1] The scheme is intended to provide attractive alternatives to road travel and to ease congestion on the M4 motorway.

Services

[edit]

Once operational, Cardiff East station is expected to be served by both existing and new rail services. This includes services running between Cardiff and Cheltenham, as well as Cardiff and Bristol. The station is planned to offer at least two trains per hour in each direction, with the potential for an increase to four trains per hour.

Design and Facilities

[edit]

The station is being designed with a focus on safety and accessibility. It will include secure cycle storage and facilities that encourage walking and cycling. The station will also provide convenient connections with local bus services to support integrated public transport.

Timeline and Status

[edit]

As of April 2025, Cardiff East remains in the planning phase. Although early estimates had targeted an opening date in 2028, the project has experienced delays. There is currently no confirmed timeline for completion.

Context

[edit]

Cardiff East railway station is part of the South Wales Metro, a major infrastructure programme aiming to modernise and integrate transport across the region. The Metro initiative seeks to improve connections through a combination of rail, bus, and active travel networks to better serve communities in South East Wales.
