Controversy and apology
[edit]In July 2025, Bir Singh performed at a government-organized cultural programme in Srinagar to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The inclusion of singing and dancing sparked sharp criticism from Sikh bodies—including the SGPC—and political figures, who called the event disrespectful to the solemn occasion.[1][2]
On July 25, 2025, he visited Akal Takht and formally apologized to officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, calling the incident a “management error” due to lack of prior briefing and his direct arrival from Australia. He recited Gurbani and expressed his readiness to accept penance.[3][4]
