Beatriz Alcina de Lyra Andrade (May 2, 1933), is a Brazilian actress.[1][2][3][4][5]

Biography

[edit]

Early years

[edit]

Beatriz Lyra was born in Canhotinho, a town in the interior of Pernambuco.[6] She moved to the city of Rio de Janeiro to work. She began her career at the Teatro Experimental da Ópera de Pascoal, directed by actor Pascoal Carlos Magno [pt], in Rio's Santa Teresa district.[7][8]

Career

[edit]

She debuted in 1969 in the soap opera A Ponte dos Suspiros [pt] by Dias Gomes on TV Globo.[9] Two years later, in 1971, she made her film debut in Lua de Mel e Amendoim [pt], directed by Fernando de Barros [pt] and Pedro Carlos Rovai [pt].[10] Since then, Beatriz has acted in several soap operas, most notably in Escrava Isaura, playing the sick and lonely Ester, the slave's owner.[11][12]

Beatriz went on to do other memorable roles for the broadcaster, including the noble Anita in Marina [pt][13], the widow Letícia in Baila Comigo[14], the humorous Irene Rock in Sol de Verão[15], the villainous socialite Helena in Amor com Amor Se Paga[16] and the sweet Almerinda in O Dono do Mundo.[17]

The actress has appeared in almost all the soap operas written by Manoel Carlos, her long-time friend, and is a key figure in their partnership, including roles in: Baila Comigo, Sol de Verão, Novo Amor [pt][18] on Rede Manchete, Felicidade[19], História de Amor[20], Por Amor[21] and Laços de Família[22], as well as a role in Mulheres Apaixonadas.[2] The author has already revealed in interviews that some actors work as a kind of 'lucky charm' in his telenovelas in order to achieve success. For a soap opera to have a large audience, Manoel Carlos usually casts three actors, citing Beatriz, Marly Bueno [pt] and Umberto Magnani [pt].[4][23]

Her last fixed role in a soap opera was in 2000 in Laços de Família, playing Cleide, the friend of the sophisticated Alma (played by the actress Marieta Severo).[22] Since then, she has only played small parts: Marta's friend in Mulheres Apaixonadas[2], Haydé in Senhora do Destino[24], the mother in O Profeta[25] and the nurse in Haja Coração.[25]
