The Battle of Dibra (Albanian: Beteja e Dibrës; German: Schlacht von Dibra) took place from 6 July to 30 August 1944, during the German occupation of Albania. German forces and Albanian collaborationist troops, acting independently but with aligned objectives, drove the Albanian Partisans (LANÇ) led by Mehmet Shehu out of Dibra. With British air support, the Partisans regrouped and recaptured the town after a failed German counteroffensive.

Background
[edit]In early July, shortly before the Battle of Dibra, a brigade from the 1st Battalion of the Albanian Partisans attacked the town of Peshkopi, located 25 kilometers north of Dibra. At the time, Peshkopi was held by a joint German and Albanian collaborator force. Fighting began around 3 PM, with the partisans managing to maintain their positions despite repeated attacks by German and Albanian forces. The battle continued until dusk, when the partisans withdrew. Initially, the partisans reported no casualties, but after the withdrawal, they suffered one killed and one wounded. The German-Albanian forces sustained 26 casualties, including both killed and wounded.[2]

And after that battle I personally looked after 30 partisan wounded, with absolutely no medicine, men lying there that one could do nothing for, mangled and with broken limbs.
