Bangladesh Civilian Force
[edit]Bangladesh Civilian Force (BCF) is a Bangladesh-based hacktivist collective known for conducting cyber operations in response to religious, political, and ideological events. The group identifies itself as a "civilian cyber defense initiative" and has been involved in several high-profile cyber campaigns that have drawn coverage from national and international media.
History and Operations
[edit]BCF gained national attention in 2020 after it claimed responsibility for hacking over 100 French websites. This campaign was reportedly launched in protest of the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.[1]
Since then, BCF has been involved in cyber activities that include:
- Retaliatory cyberattacks against foreign government websites,
- Online campaigns in response to geopolitical tensions,
- Claimed takedowns of social media pages spreading anti-Bangladesh or Islamophobic content,
- Coordination with other ideological hacktivist groups.
The group operates through encrypted platforms and social media to issue statements and share evidence of its operations.
Media Coverage
[edit]BCF has been mentioned in both domestic and international media outlets:
- In 2020, DBC News reported BCF's claim of hacking over 100 French websites following anti-Islamic content.
- In 2022, Global Voices reported on coordinated online harassment campaigns involving BCF targeting Bangladeshi activists.
- In 2024, the Times of India referenced BCF’s involvement in "Operation Sindoor," a cyber offensive linked to India–Pakistan tensions.
- Cybersecurity firm Radware listed BCF among ideological hacktivist groups active in South Asia.
Local media like ZoomBangla and Dhaka Post have also reported on BCF’s alleged cyberattacks against Indian and Israeli websites in protest of regional and international issues.[2][3]
Controversies
[edit]In December 2024, the group claimed to have been involved in the takedown of the Facebook page of Indian journalist Mayukh Ranjan Ghosh due to alleged anti-Bangladesh and communal incitement. This incident was covered by the Weekly Blitz.[4]
Some analysts and observers have raised concerns about the group’s ideological stance and potential for politically motivated targeting. However, BCF maintains that its activities are focused on defending religious dignity and national interest.
