Biography
[edit]Bai Qing Zhai (⽩庆斋) was born in December 1928 in the old town of Hengshui City, Hebei Province. Born in a martial arts family, Bai Qing Zhai practised martial arts since his childhood. At the age of 14, he moved to Beijing and studied the Three Emperors' Cannon Fist (San Huang Pao Chui, 三皇炮捶) boxing under Liu Shuchang. Liu Shuchang is a disciple of Chen Youqing, a fifth-generation of the Three Emperors' Cannon Fist boxing[1].
In Beijing, Bai Qing Zhai met Yang Wenhai, the fifth generation heir of Yang-style Taijiquan. From him, Bai learned the Yang-style Taijiquan 188 old form[2].
After years of study, he mixed the technique of the Three Emperors' Cannon Fist, learned from Liu Shushang, with the Taiji Push Hands techniques, forming his own distinctive style. In 1956, Bai travelled across China with Li Tianji and a committee of other martial artists to promote the first standardised Taiji forms: the 24-postures simplified form and 32-posture Simplified Sword form.
The Taiji boxing circle defined Bai’s Push Hands unique. Many famous masters competed with him, and he was known as the "the matchless white son" (盖世小白子). In 2008, he returned to his hometown in Hengshui City, Hebei Province, where he continued to teach Taiji Push Hands[1].
Bai Qing Zhai has been the head of the Taiji Coaching Station in Haidian District, Beijing and Baoding City, Hebei Province.
Disciples and legacy
[edit]Bai's disciples are all over China and abroad. There are still many of his heirs in Haidian District, Beijing and Baoding City, Hebei Province, and he has had a great influence in the martial arts world in China and Australia.
Grandmaster Bai Qing Zhai acknowledged the following disciples as Inner Door Students:
