Azhiyatha Bandhangal is a 1985 Malayalam language movie starring Mohan Lal and Shobana. Vasundhara Menon (Srividya) is a retired High Court judge. She is imperious, arrogant and overbearing. Her son Balakrishnan (Mohan Lal) tolerates her bossy nature in good humor. Vasundhara has a loyal assistant Easwara Pillai (Bahadur) who has been serving her since she became a judge. Vasundhara's daughter Sulochan (Sumitra) and her daughter stay with her as Sulochana works close to Vasundhara's house. Sulochana's husband, Unnikrishnan (Nedumudi Venu) visits her at her maternal home regularly.

Balakrishnan is a government officer. Geetha (Shobana) is a stenographer in his office. One day Vasundhara Menon decides to go visit Unnikrishnan's parents’ home. She gives leave to their cook and entrusts Easwara Pillai to look after Balakrishnan. After her departure, Balakrishnan asks Pillai to take leave and visit his family. Pillai leaves reluctantly as he is afraid of the repercussions if Vasundhara finds put that he left Balakrishnan alone.

One day a desperate young man Sugunachandran (Jagathy Sreekumar) comes to Balakrishnan's house asking for a job. Balakrishnan's declines to help as he doesn’t want to give any favors to anyone who might give a job to Sugunachandran. Sugunachandran lies that he is a good cook and convinces Balachandran to try him out for a day or two. Balachandran agrees and leaves for office after showing Sugunachandran the kitchen. Sugunachandran, who does not know cooking asks the neighbor lady Meenakshi to help. Meenakshi sends her niece Geetha to help Sugunachandran. Geetha cooks’ lunch and reaches office late. She is sent home for being late and loses a day’s leave. Balakrishnan enjoys the lunch as Geetha is an exceptional cook. Sugunachandran again seeks Geetha's help and Geetha helps him in the kitchen, but Balakrishnan gets wind of the act when he comes home suddenly and sees Geetha cooking in the kitchen.

Balakrishnan falls in love with Geetha, impressed by her cooking skills and general demeanor. His mother on the other hand has decided to get Sulochana's sister married to Balakrishnan. She is furious when Balakrishnan tells her that he wants to marry Geetha and expressly prohibits the relationship. She expects Balakrishnan to listen to her and not disobey any decision she has taken for his life. She insults Geetha's father and aunt calling them gold diggers. But Geetha's father and aunt do not retaliate and show great restraint. Finally, Balakrishnan and Geetha are married and on their wedding night, Vasundhara pinches her granddaughter and when she cries, Vasundhara pretends she is very sick and sends Balakrishnan to buy medicine, thereby ruining Balakrishnan and Geetha's first night. She then sacks the cooks and tells Balakrishnan to make Geetha's resign her job to take care of the household chores. Though Balakrishnan is against the idea, Geetha convinces him that she should resign and take over the household. Vasundhara tries to treat Geetha like a maid but Balakrishnan comes to her rescue every time. One day Balakrishnan tells Sulochana to go to her husband’s home instead of staying in her mother's home as she is a married woman. Vasundhara objects as Sulochana's work place are close by. Balakrishnan tells her that Sulochana should take a transfer close to her husband's house.

When Vasundhara sees that she cannot get Balakrishnan to obey her, she walks out of the house to stay at Unnikrishnan's house. Unnikrishnan's parents’ scheme to teach her a lesson and get her off her high horse. Vasundhara finally realizes her folly and returns home.
