Ayana Jihye Moon (Korean: 문지혜 아야나, December 28, 1995- present) is the First South Korean Muslim artist and model . Her name began to be known when she announced her conversion to Islam , Ayana decided to convert to Islam because of her interest in the Middle East.[1]
Childhood and Family
[edit]Ayana is the first daughter and granddaughter in her extended family. She was born in South Korea on December 28, 1995, and was given the name Jihye by her parents.[2] When she was about seven or eight years old, her mother became pregnant again, but due to her busy work life, the baby sadly did not survive.[3]
Her father is the fourth of five siblings, and all of his brothers have sons.[2] He comes from a politically conservative family, while Ayana’s mother has more liberal views.[4]
Ayana looks a lot like her father—both have large eyes, which is uncommon in Korea, where most people have smaller eyes. This made it easy for her parents to find her when she got lost during a visit to Moran Market, a well-known traditional market in South Korea during the 1990s that opened only on the 4th, 9th, 14th, 19th, 24th, and 29th of each month.[5]
Ayana’s extended family has a strong interest in politics, and her grandfather once worked in the South Korean government. When she was eight years old, she had her first political experience by actively supporting one of the candidates in a presidential election, even though she was too young to vote.[6]
Conversion to Islam
[edit]She was first introduced to Islam around age seven, through observing Muslims during the Iraq War, and began studying it for approximately ten years. Ayana formally converted on 29 April 2012, while still in secondary school. After converting, her social circle changed significantly, prompting her relocation to Malaysia, where she obtained a scholarship to continue her education. During her first Ramadan post-conversion, she fasted partially and only completed full fasting after settling in Malaysia; she later performed Tarawih prayers and found emotional solace in them.[1]
