History

[edit]

The unique sound of the rhythm and blues group, Autumn, brought national recognition to the Nashville based band and created a stir in the predominately country music capital[2]

The four man group met while attending Fisk University in Nashville, and together they combined their various musical and songwriting talents to create a fine harmony of styles. The four individuals are Darryl jones, lead vocals and percussion, George Cooper, keyboards and vocals, Randy Smith, lead and background vocals and Vanduz Bradshaw on guitars. All members worked together to compose, arrange, record and produce their unparalleled brand of music. They were often the opening act for a wide range of funk & soul musicians such as Midnight Starr, The Barkays, The SOS Band, Karyn White, Klymaxx and The Isley Brothers were they were accompanied by Cecil Thomas on bass and Duane Riley on drums.

Autumns winning performance in Nashville Music Associations "Summer Soul" in 82[3]' brought them to the attention of Compleat Records President, Charlie Fach, who signed them to his label. Mr. Fach was instrumental in guiding the careers of The Barkays, The Ohio Players and Kool and The Gang[4]. David Lombard, concert promoter and manager of a diverse number of acts such as En Vogue, Eric Benet, Kenny Latimore, Rahsaan Patterson and Loose Ends, as an associate of Dick Griffey, also noted the talent of the young group and signed on as their manager.

In the early eighties, Autumn appeared on various television shows. The group was featured on Nashville Networks cable show "After Hours"[5] seen nationwide in over 9 million homes, and was featured in an hour long "live" special in Japan[6][7]. A local Nashville television station featured the group in a two hour special, "8 O'clock at The Oasis", and on The Bobby Jones[8] Show when it was first being launched on cable stations. They also appeared on The Eighth Annual Rhythm and Blues Award Show, honored as one of the most promising act of the year[9], appearing along side acts such as Alexander ONeal, Cherell and Johnny Kemp.

Autumn's first Compleat album, "Arrival"[10], was produced by the multitalented Skip Scarborough. noted for his work with Earth Wind & Fire, ConFunkshun, Areatha Franklin, LTD, Patti Labelle and many more top name acts.

Their LP brought the group national recognition as the opportunity to record the original theme music for the hit hip hop movie, "Krush Groove" which starred, RUN DMC, Sheila E, Kurtis Blow and The Fat Boys, and prominently featured their instrumental throughout the movie[11].

With the success of the "Krush Groove" soundtrack, Compleat distributed by Polygram records, released Autumn's "Kold Krush"[12] as a 12 inch which also proved to be a big success for the young group.

Since the 80's, the group has been on a long hiatus, but they never officially broke up. As recent as 2020, they discussed returning to the the studio to complete a follow-up LP.[13]
