AustChina Institute (ACI) is an independent Australian foreign policy think tank established in December 2024. Based in Melbourne, it is dedicated to providing comprehensive, unbiased research and analysis on the Australia-China relationship. ACI aims to inform policymakers, businesses and the public through data-driven insights and strategic recommendations.
Mission
[edit]The Institute's mission is to bridge a critical gap in Australia's think tank landscape by offering impartial research on China and its relationship with Australia. It seeks to counter misinformation and promote informed decision-making in areas of trade, security, technology and climate action.
Background
[edit]ACI was founded in response to concerns about the lack of unbiased research on China within Australia's strategic policy community. The 2024 Independent Review of Commonwealth funding for strategic policy work, led by Peter Varghese AO, highlighted a systemic decline in China expertise in Australia. ACI was formed to address this gap and foster sovereign knowledge capabilities.
Research Focus
[edit]ACI conducts research across four key pillars:
- Economy and Trade
- Security and Geopolitics
- Bilateral Relations
- Technology, Science and Climate Action
Its publications include expert analysis on trade dynamics, foreign investment, regional security, academic collaborations and public opinion metrics.
Funding
[edit]ACI is a registered not-for-profit charity under the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). It is funded exclusively through public, industry and corporate donations. The Institute does not accept foreign funding.
Activities
[edit]- Publishing research and policy recommendations
- Hosting expert panels and commentary
- Providing career pathways for China studies experts
- Offering a dashboard of metrics on Australia-China relations (coming soon)
