Attack at the Warsaw University Campus – attack which took place on May 7th 2025 in front of the Auditorium Maximum building on Warsaw University Campus. 22 year old student of the Law and Administration faculty attacked a janitor and a security guard with an axe after a failed attempt to enter the building. In consequence, the janitor died by decapitation and the security guard was severly wounded. The attacker was subsequently incapacitated by university security and arrested by police.[1][2][3]

Circumstances

The attack happened at around 18:48 by the Auditorium Maximum building. 22 year old student Mieszko R.[4] stormed into the campus armed with an axe and attacked a 53 year old woman, a doorkeeper, who refused to let him inside. According to the witnesses after murdering her he committed an act of cannibalism and tried to dismember her body. Then, he attacked security guards who tried to help the woman and critically wounding one of them in the head and arms. The event was recorded on the witnesses' and passerby students' smartphones. Some of the drastic materials were later published on the platform X.

The attacker

The perpetrator was identified by the police as a 22 year old 3rd year law student at the University of Warsaw. Police didn't announce his personal data during first announcements, he was later indentified by the media as Mieszko R, his hometown being Gdynia. According to the relations from the station TVN25, the perpertator behaved irrationally and said that "he is a peradtor". His motives aren't yet established.

Immediately after the attack social media was flooded with desinformation and fake news about the perpetrator's identity. Rumor was spread that it was a ukrainian man by the name of Dmytro B. Eventually, they were refuted by official media sources.

Reactions

Condolences were expressed by the Chancellor of the Warsaw University prof. Alojzy Nowak, Warsaw President Andrzej Duda, Sejm Marshall Szymon Hołownia, Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski, MEP from KO party and former Warsaw President Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz and the Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar. Minister Bodnar was at the University at the time of the attack giving a lecture, he was safely evacuted by state security service officers. One of the officers helped the university guards with incapactitating the attacker.

Miniter of Education Marcin Kulasek called the event an awful tragedy and added that he grieves along with the victim's family. Today we want to reflect on the tragedy. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the injured guard – he said during a press conference in front of the UW campus.

Chancellor of the University of Warsaw prof. Alojzy Nowak announced the 8th of May 2025 a day of mourning on the University. All planned activities and events for that day were cancelled. During a press conference the chancellor announced that a special comission for safety on the campus will be established. He ensured that the family of the victim will be given support by the University. He called the attack the worst in Warsaw University History after World War II.

Condolences were sent by Poland's biggest Universities including University of Silesia in Katowice, University of Wrocław, Jagiellonian University, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, SGH Warsaw School of Economics and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw also announced the 8th of May as a day of mourning in its community.
