Antiquus Scriptum is a Viking metal influenced Black metal band from Portugal.[1] They are also known for ambient[2] and dungeon synth[3][4] releases.
Biography
[edit]Antiquus Scriptum began performing in 1998 as a band, playing one live show with their original formation in 1999 before transitioning to a one-man studio band with regular collaborators on most albums.[5][6] Prior to forming Antiquus, Magalhães performed in a black metal band called Firstborn Evil with Paulo Vieira and Gustavo Vieira from 1995 to 1998.[6] The Vieira brothers would be Magalhães's most frequent collaborators throughout the bands history.[6][2]
Although Magalhães has cited Norwegian black and viking metal bands such as Burzum and Mayhem as major influences, he has also cited inspiration from Christian metal and Unblack metal bands, or metal bands with Christian themes, such as Helloween and Shadows of Paragon. He has cited additional influences in Gregorian chants, Folk, Ambient, Classical,and World music in addition to 70s artists such as Cat Stevens, Pink Floyd, and The Doors.[6][5]
Magalhães has also cited inspiration in ancient history and mythology and also integrates themes of social criticism in some of his songs.[5] In line with this social criticism theme, the project has covered political protest songs as well as anti-racist Punk and Thrash metal songs such as People of the Lie originally by Kreator[7] and Russians originally by Sting[8], as well as written his own song directed at Vladimir Putin based on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Russian imperialism.[7]
