Anthony T. Bryan is a Trinidadian scholar, professor emeritus, and energy policy consultant specializing in energy development, security, geopolitics, and regional international relations in the Caribbean.

Early life and education

Bryan was born in Trinidad and Tobago. He earned his bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nebraska, where his doctoral work focused on Mexican history.

Academic career

Bryan began his academic career as a professor of Latin American history at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned tenure. He later joined the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, serving for ten years as Director of the Institute of International Relations. He currently holds the title of Honorary Senior Fellow at the same institution.

Bryan has also held visiting professorships at various universities including the University of Texas at Austin, Indiana University Bloomington, Georgetown University, Universidad Simón Bolívar in Venezuela, and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.

Consultancy and public engagement

Bryan is the co‑founder and co‑director of the Caribbean Policy Consortium, where he offers independent consultancy on regional energy geopolitics, security, and renewable energy. He has served as an advisor to public and private sector organizations throughout the Caribbean, North America, and South America.

Bryan has authored numerous works focusing on energy policy and security in the circum-Caribbean region. Notable publications include:

In April 2025, Bryan publicly advocated for deeper energy cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and Suriname. He highlighted their shared infrastructure, complementary resources, and the opportunity to form a Southern Caribbean energy bloc. He noted that while Trinidad and Tobago’s traditional energy sector is in decline, Guyana and Suriname’s emerging oil industries could revitalize regional energy dynamics.

Honors and recognition

In 2015, Bryan was inducted into the Fatima College Hall of Achievement in recognition of his contributions to academia and public policy. He retains the title of Professor Emeritus and Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of the West Indies.
