Angelie Multani (born 17 June 1970) is an Indian academic, professor, and researcher in literature and performance studies. She is currently a professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.[1] Her work engages with English-language theatre, postcolonial studies, and gender and sexuality in Indian literature.

Early life and education

Angelie Multani was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Literature from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She pursued an MA at the Centre of Linguistics and English at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi.[1]

While at JNU, she co-founded the Gender Studies Forum and was instrumental in forming the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), the first such committee in India.[2][3]

She earned her Ph.D. on the politics of English-language theatre production in the 1990s and held teaching positions at JNU and the University of Delhi before joining IIT Delhi in 2003.[1]

Career

Multani’s research focuses on modern Indian theatre, particularly the works of Mahesh Dattani, Girish Karnad, and Vijay Tendulkar. Her academic writing frequently addresses gender, sexuality, post colonialism, and the politics of the English language in India. She has supervised Ph.D. theses on fantasy literature, contemporary fiction, and science fiction poetry.

At IIT Delhi, she has served in various leadership roles including Associate Dean for Student Welfare, Head of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department, and is currently the first Dean of Diversity & Inclusion at the institute.[4][5][6]

Multani has played a pioneering role in shaping discourse around gender equity in Indian academia. Her appointment as the Dean of Diversity & Inclusion at IIT Delhi marks a landmark in Indian higher education.[6][8][4][3]
