Angelicism01
[edit]Angelicism01 is an anonymous online persona and cultural commentator known for operating a Substack newsletter, blog, and associated social media accounts. Emerging in late 2020, Angelicism01 has become a notable figure within the "vibe shift" cultural scene, particularly associated with the Dimes Square neighborhood in New York City. The project is characterized by its dense, pseudo-academic, and heavily ironic writing style, blending themes of critical theory, spirituality, pop culture, and internet slang.[1][2]
History
[edit]Angelicism01 launched its Substack newsletter on November 10, 2020, with the inaugural post titled "A Portrait of Donald Trump," which used the work of philosopher Simone Weil to frame an ironic commentary on the former U.S. president. The newsletter quickly gained attention for its esoteric and challenging prose, drawing from leftist philosophical traditions, Christian theology, and internet culture. The name "Angelicism" was chosen to reflect a conceptual exploration of a "universal language and logic," positioning the project at the intersection of human and nonhuman aspects of communication.[3]
The persona has been linked to a broader cultural movement dubbed the "vibe shift," a term popularized in part by Angelicism01 to describe a perceived shift in cultural trends and sensibilities in 2021–2022. This movement, centered in Dimes Square, includes a mix of artists, writers, and internet personalities who embrace a post-ironic, avant-garde aesthetic.[4][5]
In 2023, Angelicism01 released Film01: histoire(s) de l’internet, a multimedia project that compiles viral internet content with original footage, likened to a "Flusserian onslaught of technical images." The work has been critiqued for its lack of narrative structure but praised for its ambitious engagement with digital culture.[6][7][8][9][10]
