André Grove (born 12 December 1969), known professionally as Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist, is a South African stage hypnotist, comedian, and television presenter. He has performed over 6,500 shows across seven countries and three continents during his more than 30‑year career.[1][2][3]

Grove is known for his family-friendly comedic hypnosis shows and the kykNET television series *Skaterlag met André*. His signature "Hilarious Hypnosis" format at Montecasino was the subject of a **Mail & Guardian** feature article, highlighting his entertainment‑style hypnosis.[4][5] He has hypnotised more than 30,000 people in South Africa and appeared on more than 200 television programs.[5]

Early life and education

[edit]

André Grove was born in Durban on 12 December 1969. He began performing as a child—first magic and clowning at parties—and by age 12 was active in South African theatre.[6]

He matriculated from Hoërskool Roodepoort in 1987 and served in the military during the Angolan Border War, entertaining troops. He later studied drama, teaching, and psychology in Pretoria. In 1988 he met his mentor Max Collie, considered the father of South African stage hypnosis.[5]

Career

[edit]

Professional debut

[edit]

After Collie's death, producer Jeff Egnos invited Grove to debut in 1994 at Victory Theatre in Houghton, Johannesburg. His intended four-week run expanded to eleven sold-out weeks—launching his signature format.[1]

Style and philosophy

[edit]

Grove describes himself as a comedian first, using hypnosis as entertainment. His audience-inclusive shows blend suggestion, drama, and dry humour in a family-friendly format, for volunteers aged 16 and above.[6]

International career

[edit]

During the COVID‑19 pandemic (2020–2022), Grove relocated to the United Kingdom to continue performing amidst limited South African theatre access. He remains internationally based while planning future South African tours.[7][5]

Notable performances

[edit]

Grove has performed across seven countries at venues including Montecasino,[8] Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre,[9] and Wild Coast Sun. His 2024 "Sleep!" tour played Cape Town.[3]

He has hypnotised more than 30,000 people live.[1][2]

Television and media

[edit]

Grove hosts the 14‑part kykNET series *Skaterlag met André*, alongside well-known guest artists. A third 13‑episode series began airing on Via TV on 8 January 2025.[5]

His hypnosis session with News24 interns in 2014 received national coverage.[10]

In 2015 his performance in Cape Town was featured in a News24 video segment.[11]

His comedic style was highlighted by *Hello Lifestyle* magazine,[12] and a live hypnosis demo aired on Jacaranda FM in October 2024.[13]
