Anatolis Spyrlidis (sometimes credited as Anatolio Spyrlidis; born 1985), known professionally as RoyalVenom, is a Greek/Cypriot calligraffiti artist, designer, and muralist. He is known for merging gothic blackletter, baroque ornamentation, and urban graffiti into contemporary public artworks and canvas compositions. With roots in graffiti writing and a background in graphic design, his work bridges traditional calligraphy and modern street culture, earning international recognition and inclusion in curated exhibitions and publications.

Early life and education

[edit]

Spyrlidis was born in 1985. He studied graphic design at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom, earning a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design. He began graffiti in the early 2000s under the alias DonDante, later evolving into calligraffiti—a fusion of classical calligraphy and street art.

Career and style

[edit]

Since 2014, RoyalVenom has developed a signature calligraffiti style blending gothic blackletter, Swiss-style composition, and baroque detail. His work includes large-scale murals, typographic compositions, and fine art canvases. He also works as a creative director and UX/UI designer with over fifteen years of experience.

Spyrlidis is a member of the international art collectives:

  • Calligrafreaks (Spain–Germany)
  • Supremacaligrafia Crew (Mexico)

His murals have been documented on global street art platforms such as Street Art Cities.

Ambassador roles

[edit]

Spyrlidis is the Cyprus ambassador for:

  • Pilot Pen
  • Winsor & Newton
  • Liquitex

Through these partnerships, he promotes professional-grade materials for calligraphy and mural art across exhibitions, workshops, and social media.

Exhibitions and recognition

[edit]

In October 2020, Spyrlidis represented Cyprus at the United by Calligraphy international exhibition in Bucharest, Romania, organized by the Freedom for Education, Culture and Sport Association. He received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Romanian Ministry of Culture for his contribution to global calligraphy.[1]

That year, he painted the mural ELEMENTS: Earth–Sea–Sun–Life in Chlorakas, Paphos, as part of the ReCOVER20 × ANTAMOSIS public art initiative. The mural was featured in both The National Herald[2] and the International Museum of Calligraphy.[3]

In 2022 and 2023, his original calligraffiti canvases were used as award trophies in the Blackwork category at the Cyprus International Tattoo Convention.

He has also participated in international street art festivals:

  • Meeting of Styles Kosovo – Pristina (2019)
  • Meeting of Styles Italy – Parma (2023)

[edit]

In 2025, Spyrlidis was featured in the art book Walled Island: Street Art of Cyprus, a curated publication profiling over 215 artworks by 115 artists across Cyprus. Authored by Jevgenijs Korols, Olga Dynyak, and Olga Asanti, the book includes artist interviews, mural maps, and contextual essays.[4]
