American Canadian School of Medicine

[edit]

The American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) is a medical school located in Portsmouth, Dominica. Established in 2023, it offers medical education programs targeting students primarily from the United States and Canada.[1][2]

History

[edit]

ACSOM was founded as a non-profit educational institution in Dominica in 2023, with operations beginning in August of that year.[2] The school welcomed its first students in 2023, occupying facilities at the former Ross University School of Medicine campus in Portsmouth.[3] By early 2025, the school had begun establishing partnerships with Canadian universities for pre-medicine and healthcare education pathways.[4][5]

Campus

[edit]

The ACSOM campus is located in Portsmouth, Dominica, at the site formerly occupied by Ross University School of Medicine.[2] According to the school's materials, the campus encompasses approximately 33 acres with educational facilities including laboratories and classrooms.[1] The Princeton Review lists the school's address as 1 Wall Street, Portsmouth, Commonwealth of Dominica.[6]

Accreditation

[edit]

As of 2023, ACSOM had received accreditation from the Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating (IAAR), an organization recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).[7] The school also holds preliminary accreditation from the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM), an Ireland-based accreditor also recognized by WFME.[8]

ACSOM is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools,[9] which enables its graduates to apply for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification, a requirement for international medical graduates seeking residency and licensure in the United States.

Academic programs

[edit]

ACSOM offers a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program that includes basic sciences education in Dominica followed by clinical rotations at affiliated teaching hospitals.[1] The school also offers a preparatory program designed to strengthen students' foundational knowledge in basic sciences before entering the M.D. program.[1] According to The Princeton Review, the medical program duration is 4 years.[6]

Clinical education

[edit]

Students complete clinical rotations at affiliated teaching hospitals, primarily in California as of 2023, with planned expansion to additional locations.[1]

Admissions

[edit]

The Princeton Review reports that ACSOM requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and accepts MCAT scores.[6]

Partnerships

[edit]

ACSOM has established academic partnerships with several Canadian universities to create pathways for students interested in medical education:

In January 2024, ACSOM signed an agreement with Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta to create educational opportunities for Mount Royal students interested in pursuing medical careers.[4]

In January 2025, ACSOM partnered with Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario to establish new pathways for Brock's public health students.[5]

The University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario established a pathway for its Faculty of Science graduates to enter ACSOM's medical programs.[10][11]

Administration

[edit]

As of 2023, ACSOM's leadership included:[12][13]

Arvin N. Bagherpour, M.D.: Chief Executive Officer and Board Chair

Ramin Ahmadi, M.D., MPH: Founding Dean and Chief Academic Officer

The school's board members have included Sanjiv Chopra, M.D. (former Faculty Dean for Continuing Medical Education at Harvard Medical School), Andrew Padmos, M.D. (former CEO of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada), and Veronica Thierry Mallett, M.D.[additional citation(s) needed]

Economic impact

[edit]

According to Dominica News Online, ACSOM was expected to create employment opportunities for local residents and contribute to the economy of Portsmouth and the broader Dominican community.[2]

Community Engagement

[edit]

ACSOM has established partnerships with local Dominican organizations for community health initiatives and education. In April 2023, the school collaborated with Jolly's Pharmacy, a local pharmaceutical provider, on health education programs for the Portsmouth community.[14]

According to press materials, ACSOM has participated in additional community activities, including providing training for the local fire department on emergency medical response[15] and hosting educational visits from students of the Arthur Waldron Seventh-day Adventist Academy to introduce local youth to medical education opportunities.[16]

Media coverage

[edit]

In October 2023, Dean Ramin Ahmadi was featured on the "Raise the Line" podcast discussing the school's educational approach.[17]
