Amar Nath Upadhyay (21 November 1931 – 25 January 2024) was an Indian politician and public servant from Assam. He was associated with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and held several key administrative and political positions in the state. He was particularly known for his contributions to the handloom and textile sector in Assam, and his work for the Gorkha community in the region.

Early Life and Background

Amar Nath Upadhyay was born on 21 November 1931 in Budhachhapadi, a village in Sonitpur district, Assam. He later settled in Chandmari, Tezpur. He was actively involved in public service from a young age and emerged as a prominent figure in Assam's socio-political sphere.

Political Career

Upadhyay was a senior leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a member of the AGP Central Committee. Over the course of his career, he held several important positions in Assam’s government and public sector undertakings:

  • Chairman of Assam Handloom and Textile Corporation
  • Chairman of West Assam Milk Union Limited (WAMUL)
  • Chairman of Assam Commodities Corporation

He played a significant role in promoting handloom and dairy industries in Assam, contributing to local employment and rural development.

Social and Community Work

Upadhyay was also a prominent leader of the Assam Gorkha Sammelan, he was also Vice President of Assam Gorkha sammmelan advocating for the rights and welfare of the Gorkha community in the state. He was deeply involved in grassroots-level mobilization and worked towards strengthening the identity and representation of the Gorkha people in Assam's political and social fabric.

Personal Life

Amar Nath Upadhyay was married to Shanti Devi. He was the father of National Martyr Vaijanti Devi, who is remembered for her contributions and sacrifice for the nation.

Death

Amar Nath Upadhyay passed away on 25 January 2024. His death was widely mourned in Assam, with several political and community leaders paying tribute to his legacy.
