Álvaro Cuervo-Cazurra is a Spanish-born US academic and researcher who serves as Professor of International Business and Strategy and the Center for Emerging Markets Chair of Global Sustainability[1] at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business[2] in the United States. He is recognized for his contributions and accomplishments in the field of global strategy, particularly focusing on emerging market multinationals, international business, and corporate sustainability.
Education
[edit]Cuervo-Cazurra holds a Ph.D. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US and a Ph.D. in Business Economics from the University of Salamanca in Spain. He completed his undergraduate education at Complutense University of Madrid, earning a Licenciatura (Bachelor of Business Administration) with majors in Finance and Marketing, and studied abroad at Kingston University through the Erasmus program[3].
Academic Career
[edit]Cuervo-Cazurra began his academic career at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management and subsequently held positions at the University of South Carolina's Moore School of Business. He joined Northeastern University in 2011, where he teaches strategy, global strategy, and sustainability strategy.
He has been a visiting professor or scholar at institution in Japan[4], Thailand[5], Spain[6], South Africa[7], Poland[8], Mexico[9], Brazil[10], and the United Kingdom[11].
Research
[edit]Cuervo-Cazurra's research focuses on two main areas:
Global Strategic Management: He examines how institutions affect firms' capability upgrading and internationalization, with particular emphasis on emerging market multinationals. His work explores how companies from developing countries become globally competitive and the unique challenges they face.
Global Sustainable Governance: His secondary research line investigates how ownership structures and incentives influence sustainability strategies and societal value creation, including studies on state-owned enterprises and corporate social responsibility.
He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles[12], authored eight books[13], and over 50 book chapters[14]. His work appears in leading academic journals including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Science, Research Policy, and Strategic Management Journal.
He has been recognized as the 2nd top author on emerging market multinationals by impact score[15] and ranks among the top 0.05% of scholars worldwide by impact (Scholar GPS)[16].
Editorial and Professional Work
[edit]Cuervo-Cazurra has held several significant editorial positions: Co-Editor of Global Strategy Journal[17] (2017-2023); Consulting Editor of Journal of International Business Studies (2016-present); Reviewing Editor of Journal of International Business Studies (2010-2016), and Editorial board member of Academy of Management Journal[18], Academy of Management Review[19], and Strategic Management Journal[20]
He serves in the Executive Committee of the Strategy Division of the Academy of Management, having served previously in the Executive Committee of the International Management Division of the Academy of Management, and as Representative-at-Large of the Strategic Management Society's Global Strategy Interest Group.

[edit]Cuervo-Cazurra teaches courses on strategy, global strategy, and sustainability at undergraduate, master's, and executive levels. He has taught internationally in Austria, Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, Poland, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Consulting
[edit]He provides consulting services on global strategy and internationalization to firms, governments, and universities. His consulting work has included assignments in Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Poland, and the United States, as well as training programs for government agencies in Brazil and Thailand on supporting domestic firm internationalization.
