AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles is a nonprofit public–private ocean institute in San Pedro, California. It supports scientific collaboration, blue economy business initiatives, and education and workforce development programs.

AltaSea was formed in 2007 by Jenny Krusoe and Leonard Aube to redevelop a portion of the Port of Los Angeles, formerly City Dock No. 1, into a center for ocean-based research and innovation. In July 2023 the organization began renovating three historic warehouses with $29 million from the State of California, the Port of Los Angeles, and private donors. The Center for Innovation at Berth 58 opened on 29 May 2024; attendees included Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass. The center is part of a $30 million refurbishment program.[1]
Campus
[edit]The 35-acre campus includes warehouses at Berths 58, 59, and 60 that provide research laboratories, office space, and waterfront access. A 2.2-megawatt rooftop solar array supplies electricity to the site and to neighboring homes.[2]
Programs and Initiatives
[edit]AltaSea hosts research on regenerative aquaculture, underwater robotics and renewable energy. Partners include researchers from the University of Southern California (USC), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), as well as explorer Dr. Robert Ballard's research vessel, EV Nautilus. The campus supports projects in regenerative aquaculture, underwater robotics, and renewable energy.
In 2023, AltaSea partnered with Eco Wave Power to develop the first onshore wave energy pilot station in the United States. The project received its final permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and aims to demonstrate the feasibility of wave energy as a renewable resource.[3]
Leadership
[edit]As of 2024, Terry Tamminen is the President and CEO. He previously served as Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency and as Cabinet Secretary to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.[4]
