Alexander M. Kolevzon is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Since 2007, Kolevzon has served as the Clinical Director of the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai[1].[2] Since 2014, he has been the Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for the Mount Sinai Health System. Prior to these roles, Kolevzon was the Director of Consultation and Liaison Services in Child Psychiatry (2005–2007) and the Director of Clinical Services in Child Psychiatry (2007–2009) at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Kolevzon's research interests include understanding the neurobiology of autism and related neurodevelopmental disorders, biomarker discovery, and developing novel therapeutics. His group is focused on studying specific genetic forms of autism, including Phelan-McDermid syndrome, FOXP1 syndrome, and ADNP syndrome in order to explore targets for pharmacological intervention. Kolevzon leads the Experimental Therapeutics Program at the Seaver Autism Center[3] which conducts studies that range from small pilot trials to multi-centered pivotal FDA studies. He also leads the Phelan-McDermid syndrome network of the Developmental Synaptopathies Consortium,[4] a national rare disease clinical research network dedicated to clinical trial readiness and studying the natural history of Phelan-McDermid syndrome. He is a frequently invited speaker regionally, nationally, and internationally and is recognized as the world's leading clinical expert in Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

[5][6]

He has consistently won awards for teaching and mentoring for the past 20+ years and is extremely committed to medical student and residency education as an active teacher, mentor, and clinical supervisor.

Background

[edit]

Kolevzon was born and raised in New York City. He first met a child with autism at the 92nd Street Y summer camp where he worked as a counselor for children with developmental disabilities. The remarkable strengths many of these children showed despite their profound social and communication challenges fascinated him and planted a seed that would later grow into a career dedicated to developing better treatments.

Education

[edit]

Kolevzon received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1993), completed a Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program at Columbia University (1995), and received his M.D. from Tel Aviv University (2000), New York State/American Program. Following medical school, Kolevzon completed residency training in general psychiatry (2003) and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry (2005), both at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
