Akash Vatsa
[edit]Akash Vatsa is an Indian digital creator and airline passenger who gained national and international attention in June 2025 after publicly documenting technical malfunctions aboard an Air India flight just hours before that same aircraft was involved in the fatal Air India Flight AI171 crash. His video, shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), was widely circulated by Indian and international news agencies.
Background
[edit]Akash Vatsa traveled from Delhi to Ahmedabad on Air India flight AI171 on June 20, 2025, aboard a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. During the flight, Vatsa observed several system failures, including non-functional air conditioning, in-flight entertainment, call buttons, and reading lights.
He recorded and posted a video on X describing the issues, tagging Air India and Indian media handles. The post received widespread attention shortly after the same aircraft took off for its onward flight to London and tragically crashed near Ahmedabad.
Viral Video and Media Coverage
[edit]Vatsa’s video gained millions of views within hours. Multiple news outlets reported on his post and video, including:

In the video, Vatsa said: “The AC is not working … the TV screens are not working … even the button for calling the cabin crew is not working … not even the light is working.” Passengers were seen using safety pamphlets and magazines to fan themselves.
Public Response and Backlash
[edit]While many social media users and media professionals supported Vatsa's transparency, he also received backlash from some users, particularly after the crash. Some outlets incorrectly reported that he had deleted the original post, which Vatsa later clarified was false. As of August 2025, the tweet and video remain publicly accessible.
Air India's Response
[edit]Despite repeated tagging and follow-up tweets, Air India has not publicly responded to Vatsa’s post. No official investigation has directly attributed the crash to the issues documented in Vatsa’s video, though authorities have confirmed that the aircraft was the same.
