The "Corpo del genio aeronautico" or Corp of Aeronautical Engineers (C.G.A.) is the engineering corps Military Engineering of the Italian Air Force.
The corp is responsible for the maintenance and testing of aircraft, the construction of installations in foreign territories, and the development of new technologies in collaboration with private companies.
It is composed of military Officers of the Aeronautical Engineering branch.
History
[edit]It sees its origins in the Engine Engineers and Aerostats of the Royal Italian Army. These in fact after the birth of the Regia Aeronautica in July 1923 became an integral part of it, under the leadership of Capt. Giulio Douhet [1]
Lt. Gen. Alessandro Guidoni was the first head of the Corps of Air Corps Engineers.[1]
Functions
[edit]Performs inherent technical functions:
- the Corps is responsible for the design, construction, outfitting, and arming of all types of aeronautical equipment, including the real estate assets of the Air Force;
- for the testing and maintenance of aeronautical equipment and of the Air Force's real estate assets;
- it also carries out any other technical service related to the use of military aircraft and exercises technical oversight over the aeronautical equipment of civil aviation.
Organization
[edit]Today, the Corps of Aeronautical Engineers is divided into the 'normal' and 'special' branches, and into the following specialties:
- Aerospace Engineers
- Electronic Engineers
- Civil Engineers
- Physicists (major in Meteorology)
- Chemists
