Aimaro Oreglia d'Isola, known commonly as Aimaro Isola (Torino, 14 January 1928), is an Italian architect.

Biography

Youngest son of Baron Vittorio Oreglia d'Isola and Countess Caterina Malingri di Bagnolo, brother of the nun Leletta D'Isola, he took part in the Italian Resistance, joining - at just 16 years old to the 105th Garibaldi Brigade.[1]. After graduating in architecture at the Polytechnic of Turin in 1952, he taught at the University of Turin. In 1950 he created a studio with Roberto Gabetti. In the late 1950s they were among the major exponents of the Neoliberty movement (see Liberty Style). Their works built in the Piedmont region[2] but known internationally[3] include: the Casa Paravia (Piazza Statuto, Turin), the Palazzo della Borsa Valori (also in Turin), the Palazzo di Giustizia in Alba, residential complexes, urban planning projects and artistic renovations. They also dealt with religious architecture, with particular research concepts.

Today, he is Professor Emeritus of the Polytechnic of Turin, National Academician of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, and a National Academician of the Academy of Sciences in Turin.

After the death of Roberto Gabetti in 2000, Aimaro Isola continued his work as a designer by founding the Isolarchitetti studio with his son Saverio Oreglia d'Isola (born in Turin on 27 October 1972).

Design and architecture works are exhibited among the permanent collections at MOMA in New York[4], the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Accademia di San Luca and the Maxxi in Rome.

Awards

  • with Roberto Gabetti he received the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize from the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in 1988[5],
  • the International Prize ‘Architectures in Stone’ (1991)[6]
  • the Luigi Cosenza Special Prize from the Targa d'Argento Jury for the best architecture built in Italy in the two-year period 96/97 (1998; for the Museum of Antiquities of Turin)
  • in 1998 he received the Luigi Cosenza Special Prize from the Targa d'Argento Jury for the best architecture built in Italy in the two-year period 96/97, for the Museum of Antiquities of Turin.
  • In 2002 he received the silver medal of Benemerito della Cultura Italiana from the President of the Republic
  • in 2006 the Ance-IN/ARCH National Prize for Career Achievement[7]
  • in 2006 the “BIOECOLAB Sustainability Award, Urban Planning category for the redevelopment project of the “Parco Ottavi” area in Reggio Emilia
  • In 2015 he received the “Targa d’oro 2015” Award from the UID (Italian Design Union).
  • In 2017 he received the City of Pisa Award for Urban Quality and the first prize awarded to the project of the “Museum of Egyptian Antiquities of Turin” -
