N V Chacko – the selfless politician

NV Chacko was born on 11 September 1891 in Poothrikka village, Ernakulam district, Kerala. He obtained BA and BL degrees from Maharaja's College and Madras Christian College. He was the first BL graduate from Ernakulam district. While he was a lawyer in the Paravur court, he became a frontline fighter in the freedom struggle. When the CP Ramswamy Iyar unleashed the oppressive rule, he served three terms in prison as the seventh Sarvadhipati (dictator) of the Travancore State Congress. He was a member of the Travancore State from 1938. He was the representative of a large constituency consisting of Paravur, Muvattupuzha and Devikulam. He fought for the needs of farmers in the Legislative Assembly. It was NV Chacko who converted Poothrikka a remote village to the position of Panchayat, Ayurveda Hospital, upgraded LP Poothrikka School into a UP School and brought in a Cooperative Society Kadayiruppu Hospital. NV Chacko's Assembly speeches are very famous. He was one of the 19 members of the Transvaal Council who were convicted and disqualified for violating the law. He was a person who did not bow his head in front of anyone who called CP a dog to his face. When Gandhiji asked him to withdraw the allegations against CP, he sent a telegram to Gandhiji saying that it was wrong. History has proven that Gandhiji's decision was wrong. Purity of life, cleanliness and a strict life course were the hallmarks of truthful Sir. When he was invited to give him a Copper Plate by honourable prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1972, he refused. He accepted the copper certificate due to the love of others but refused the pension. He contested the 1951 elections as per the conditions but was defeated by NV Chacko. NV Chacko, who left politics saying that if the people do not want me, there will be no more public service, passed away on May 13, 1976. Everyone has forgotten NV Chacko, who was equal to Pattom Thanu Pillai A J John, Akkamma Cherian, K Karunakaran, etc., but Tamra Patram always reminds us of him.
