Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band is an American animated children's television special and short-form series based on the 2011 picture book of the same name by Kwame Alexander. The television adaptation premiered on PBS KIDS on May 1, 2025, and was produced by GBH Kids. The project includes a one-hour special and a series of 20 animated shorts titled Acoustic Rooster: Jazzy Jams, aimed at introducing preschool-aged children to jazz music and themes of creativity, collaboration, and self-expression.[1][2][3]
Overview
[edit]The television adaptation centers on Acoustic Rooster, a guitar-playing rooster who aspires to join a world-class jazz band. The narrative features anthropomorphic animal characters with names that pay homage to jazz legends, such as Mules Davis (Miles Davis), Ella Finchgerald (Ella Fitzgerald), Duck Ellington (Duke Ellington), and the Chick-A-Dees. The series aims to teach foundational music concepts and the importance of teamwork, encouraging children to use creativity as an outlet for self-expression.[4][5]
Broadcast and Distribution
[edit]The one-hour special premiered on PBS KIDS on May 1, 2025. The Acoustic Rooster: Jazzy Jams shorts began rolling out weekly starting May 9, 2025. In addition to the television content, the franchise expanded to include an interactive game titled Groovin' with Acoustic Rooster, allowing children to create their own music and engage with songs from the show.[4][5]
Educational Goals
[edit]The series is designed to introduce children aged 3–5 to various aspects of jazz music, including different styles, instruments, and musical concepts such as beat, call and response, and improvisation. It also addresses universal themes relevant to young children and their families, such as bedtime routines and celebrating birthdays, through a jazz-infused lens.[4][5]
Related Publications
[edit]In conjunction with the television series, two board books were released: Acoustic Rooster and Friends, which tells Acoustic Rooster’s story through lyrical, jazzy text, and Acoustic Rooster Sings the Alphabet, featuring jazz facts from A to Z. Both books were published by Sleeping Bear Press and became available on April 1, 2025.[4][5]
