A Punk Daydream (Indonesian: Lamunan Oi!) is a 2019 documentary film directed by Belgian filmmaker Jimmy Hendrickx, with Kristian van der Heyden credited as co-director and producer.[1] The film explores the Indonesian street punk subculture, focusing on the lives of marginalized youth in Jakarta and their engagement with punk as a form of identity, resistance, and community.[2]

Background and Development

[edit]

The inception of A Punk Daydream traces back to 2012, when Hendrickx encountered a 14-year-old street youth named Eka during a bus ride on a local angkot in Jakarta. Intrigued by Eka's appearance and demeanor, Hendrickx followed him into Jakarta's street punk scene. This encounter led to a multi-year exploration of the Indonesian punk subculture, culminating in the feature-length documentary.

Punk subculture has existed in Indonesia since the 1980s, but developed along different lines than in Western contexts. In Indonesia, particularly in urban areas like Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta, punk became more than a musical or aesthetic movement-it functioned as a support system and form of resistance for marginalized youth, especially street children (anak jalanan).

Synopsis

[edit]

The film follows Eka and his friends, members of Jakarta’s punk community, as they navigate life on the streets. They have escaped parental and school authority and strive for individual freedom amid difficult urban conditions. Through their experiences, the documentary examines how punk culture provides a sense of belonging and a form of resistance against mainstream societal norms. The narrative also highlights the Dayak and Mentawai tribes, whose traditional tattoo culture and way of life are depicted as being under threat from modernization and environmental changes.

Themes

[edit]

Punk as a Tool for Survival

[edit]

A Punk Daydream delves into how punk, with its emphasis on self-expression and rejection of authority, became a tool for survival among street kids. Many of these youths came from broken homes, a recurring theme in Indonesian punk lyrics. Due to family breakdowns-often linked to remarriage and neglect-children found themselves displaced and gravitated toward punk as a means of forming identity and community.

Punk Communities and Grassroots Support

[edit]

Older punks, such as the members of the band Marjinal, played a pivotal role in the emergence of punk as a social movement. Mike and Bobby of Marjinal became known for their grassroots outreach to street kids, teaching them basic musical skills-most notably the ukulele. This sparked a trend among punk street children, who began forming small music groups and writing lyrics as a way to earn money and express themselves. According to Bobby Marjinal, "We teach the kids how to play music because music is the weapon of the voiceless. Punk is an escape from the streets, and it helps them find a sense of belonging."

Other communities, such as Masberto (Massarakate Bertattoo) in Bogor, Jakarta, also play a vital role, offering shelter and practical skills like T-shirt printing to street kids.

Cultural Juxtaposition and Tattoo Revival

[edit]

The film integrates an essayistic style that contrasts the punk subculture with the traditional cultures of Indonesia. Scenes from the tribal life of groups such as the Dayak and Mentawai people highlight how these cultures are rapidly changing due to modernization and resource extraction industries.

A significant element of the punk aesthetic in Indonesia is the deep connection to tattoos, viewed by many street kids as a means of reclaiming ancient identities. Tattooing, once widespread in Indonesia, was stigmatized during Suharto's regime, which associated tattoos with criminality. The tattoo culture has since become a symbol of freedom and resistance. Siti Rahmawati, a cultural researcher, notes: "In Indonesia, tattoos were once a symbol of strength and identity for indigenous people. Today, the punk youth are reclaiming that ancient symbolism as their own rebellion against modern societal norms."

During filming, Hendrickx observed a revival of the ancient tattoo technique known as "tapping," where needles are used to create designs, a practice being reintroduced by street punks as a way to reconnect with cultural roots.

Community and Solidarity

[edit]

Punk communities in Indonesia often serve as surrogate families for street youth who have been marginalized or rejected by mainstream society. Agus Setiawan, a blogger on punk youth, states: "Punk isn't just about rebellion; it's about finding a family. For these street kids, punk is the only community that accepts them. It's where they build their sense of self-worth and solidarity.

Intersection with Indigenous Culture

[edit]

The documentary draws thematic connections between the punk movement and Indonesia’s indigenous Dayak and Mentawai people, particularly in their shared experiences of marginalization and resistance. Andri Setiawan, a cultural anthropologist, explains: "In both punk and tribal life, there’s a shared longing for freedom from external control. The punk kids here in Indonesia are not only rejecting urban society but also embracing a romanticized version of indigenous culture as a way to connect with something more authentic.

Petrus killings and Stigmatization

[edit]

The film references the legacy of the Petrus killings (penembakan misterius, or "mysterious shootings"), a series of state-sanctioned extrajudicial executions in Indonesia during the early 1980s. These events contributed to the stigmatization of tattoos and the association of tattooed individuals with criminality, a perception that persists in Indonesian society As noted in the film, "Tattoos, seen by mainstream Indonesian society as an intimidating insignia of criminals, often inked behind bars to instill fear, are etched on their faces... Consequently, these young men are dismissed from job opportunities, their facial tattoos both embodying and emphasizing their estrangement from the society they once belonged to."

Impact and Online Communities

[edit]

The production of A Punk Daydream contributed to increased visibility for Indonesian punk youth. Hendrickx's documentation of street kids and their culture paved the way for others to share their stories through film and social media. Many punk youth began producing their own content, including videos and music, some of which gained large followings online. This development provided new platforms for self-expression and income generation among marginalized youth.
