A Killer Paradox (Webtoon)
[edit]A Killer Paradox (Korean: 살인자ㅇ난감 }(살인자이응난감) is a South Korean thriller webtoon written by Kkomabi (꼬마비) and illustrated by Nomabi. It was originally published on Naver Webtoon from August 8, 2010, to June 3, 2011, and comprises 54 chapters over three volumes. The English version is available on LINE Webtoon.
Premise
[edit]The story follows Lee Tang, an ostensibly ordinary college student who accidentally kills a man during a part-time job at a convenience store. Tormented by guilt, he soon discovers that his victim was actually a serial killer—someone whose actions make them deserve death. Realizing he has an uncanny ability to identify such “bad seeds,” Lee Tang embarks on a vigilante mission to eliminate those who escape justice.
Characters
[edit]Lee Tang
[edit]Actor: 최우식(Choi Woo Shik)[2], Voiced by 金本 涼輔[3](Ryosuke Kanemoto) (Japanese), Paul Syre (English)
The main protagonist, Initially depicted as an ordinary and indecisive university student. Lee Tang's life changes drastically after he accidentally kills a man who turns out to be a serial killer. This event triggers a series of moral dilemmas and confrontations, eventually leading him down a dark path where he begins to believe that he has a unique ability to identify and eliminate people who have committed serious crimes.
Throughout the story, Lee Tang transforms from a timid and passive individual into a more complex and morally ambiguous character. His actions raise philosophical questions about justice, vigilantism, and the morality of taking a life for the "greater good." His internal struggle and evolving sense of righteousness are central to the webtoon’s exploration of the theme: “What is true justice?”
In the Netflix adaptation of the webtoon, Lee Tang is portrayed by actor Choi Woo-shik. The drama version further simplifies his motivations and reframes him as a more sympathetic, reluctant antihero, emphasizing action and emotional drama over the original's psychological depth and ambiguity.
Jang Nan-gam
[edit]Actor: 손석구(Son Suk-ku)[4], Voiced by 三上哲[5](Satoshi Mikami) (Japanese), Vic Chao (English)
A key character in A Killer Paradox. He is a persistent and morally upright detective who begins investigating a series of mysterious murders, eventually suspecting Lee Tang’s involvement. Unlike typical detectives, Jang Nan-gam operates with a strong personal sense of justice and often shows empathy for criminals who commit acts out of desperation or moral conflict.
Despite being on the side of the law, he is not depicted as a purely black-and-white figure. His interactions with Lee Tang raise questions about the boundaries of legal justice versus moral justice. He often struggles between his duty to arrest Lee Tang and his recognition of Tang’s targets being morally “guilty.” His pursuit of Tang serves as one of the central narrative tensions in the series.
In the Netflix adaptation, the character is portrayed by Son Suk-ku and reimagined with more emotional depth, focusing on his past traumas and philosophical crisis about justice and violence.
Nobin
[edit]Actor: 김요한(Kim Yo-han)[6], Voiced by 落合 福嗣[7](Fukushi Ochiai) (Japanese), Caleb Yen (English)
A dangerous and enigmatic character introduced in the later chapters of A Killer Paradox. Unlike the protagonist Lee Tang, who is conflicted about his killings, Nobin embraces murder without remorse. He sees violence as justified—or even pleasurable—when targeting those he deems deserving, reflecting a more radical form of vigilantism.
He acts as a dark counterpart to Lee Tang, showing what happens when moral boundaries are completely eroded. His presence escalates the tone of the webtoon from philosophical thriller to psychological and physical horror, challenging both Lee Tang and Jang Nan-gam with his nihilistic worldview.
In the Netflix adaptation, Nobin's character is altered and stylized for greater cinematic tension, emphasizing action and suspense more than his original philosophical role.

The webtoon explores themes of morality, justice, and the nature of evil through psychological depth and narrative ambiguity. A prominent motif is that even ordinary individuals are capable of heinous acts under extreme conditions, reflecting the "banality of evil."
Cross-Media Adaptation
[edit]In February 2024, the webtoon was adapted into the Netflix crime thriller dark comedy series A Killer Paradox (살인자ㅇ난감), starring Choi Woo-shik as Lee Tang, Son Suk-ku as Jang Nan-gam, and Lee Hee-joon as Songchon.[8]
The Netflix series notably restructures the original webtoon's tone and narrative to align with platform preferences, often simplifying its moral complexity and relying on genre conventions such as vigilante justice and emotional catharsis. Academic analysis by Su Zie Choe (2024) in the Journal of Popular Narrative highlights that while the adaptation succeeds in satisfying binge-watch habits and genre expectations, it diminishes some of the original webtoon's deeper philosophical dilemmas and ethical ambiguities, particularly concerning Lee Tang's internal struggles and the nuanced portrayal of justice.[9] Choe's study further elaborates that this approach often shifts the series' focus towards heightened action and emotional drama, streamlining character motivations and interactions compared to the webtoon's more profound psychological depth and exploration of moral grey areas.[9] This, Choe suggests, allows for a more cinematic experience but potentially reduces the intricate philosophical questions originally posed by the comic.[9]
The series features voice acting for its Japanese and English dubs. Ryosuke Kanemoto voices Lee Tang in the Japanese dub, while Satoshi Mikami and Vic Chao voice Jang Nan-gam in the Japanese and English dubs respectively. Fukushi Ochiai and Caleb Yen provide the Japanese and English voices for Nobin.[Note 1]
Reception
[edit]The webtoon A Killer Paradox has received critical acclaim for its unique narrative and philosophical depth. Soo-kyung Kim of Webtoon Guide praised the series for its "bizarre imagination" that explores the complex premise of accidental killings targeting morally "deserving" victims.[10]
Kim highlighted the ironic impact of the cute, simplified character designs delivering a cruel and heavy narrative. She noted the series, as the first part of Kkomabi's "Death Trilogy" (followed by The Girl from the Grave and Unresolved), distinguishes itself by exploring murder from the killer's perspective. Kim further elaborated on the protagonist Lee Tang's evolving psychological states—from accidental killer to self-proclaimed avenger—which provoke contemplation on justice and morality. Comparing Lee Tang to characters like Dexter and Batman, Kim raised profound questions about the justification of murder, even when aimed at eliminating undeniable criminals, and emphasized the contrast with detective Jang Nan-gam's steadfast adherence to the law's boundaries.[10]
Additionally, the cross-media adaptation of A Killer Paradox into a Netflix series has drawn academic interest. Su Zie Choe's 2024 study in the Journal of Popular Narrative examines the webtoon as a case study for cross-media storytelling on OTT platforms, analyzing how the original narrative's philosophical themes of justice and morality are reinterpreted in the drama adaptation.[9]
The physical publication of the webtoon further indicates its prominence, with YES24 reporting on the release of its third collected volume in February 2016.[11]
