AY Poyoo (born Emmanuel Yeboah; June 5, 2000) is a Ghanaian rapper, comedian and internet personality. He gained international attention in 2020 with his viral single "GOAT" (Twi: Aponkye), a comedic rap that quickly amassed over one million views on YouTube.[1][2]

Known for his humorous persona and self-proclaimed "face of GH rap" branding, he has since released the EP The Rejected Stone (2024), and collaborated with artists such as Sho Madjozi, Patapaa, Wanlov the Kubolor and Ahkan. He has been profiled by major media outlets including BBC News Africa.[3] And earned a YouTube Creator Award after surpassing 100,000 subscribers.[4][5]

Early life and education

[edit]

AY Poyoo was born and raised in Ghana. He grew up in a financially disadvantaged household and was raised by his mother after his father left.[6] Despite scoring highly in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), he enrolled in a technical school to study auto mechanics due to financial limitations.[7]

Career

[edit]

AY Poyoo began performing music in 2019 and rose to prominence in 2020 when the music video for his debut single "GOAT" went viral.[1]

Later that year, he gained attention from American rapper Snoop Dogg, who praised him during a livestream hosted by comedian Michael Blackson.[8]

In May 2023, Poyoo walked the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards red carpet with a live goat, reinforcing his "GOAT" image.[9]

In 2024, he revealed that his earnings from performances were very modest just $100 over three years blaming promoters who refused to pay underground artists.[10][11]

In November 2023, he signed with Nigerian label Tree Money Yard Empire.[12] He stated in an interview that he relocated to Nigeria to better understand music production, songwriting, and audio engineering.[13]

Musical style and image

[edit]

Known for his eccentric appearance, humorous lyrics and energetic delivery, AY Poyoo has carved out a unique comedic-rap identity in African hip hop.[14]

Collaborations

[edit]

AY Poyoo requested a collaboration with South African artist Sho Madjozi via social media. She responded positively, saying his music "kind of bangs".[15][16] The collaboration was later confirmed and led to a joint single.[17][18]
