AWI (Ability with Innovation General Contracting LLC) is an Iraqi engineering and construction company specializing in oil & gas, power generation, and infrastructure development. Headquartered in Baghdad, Iraq, it operates in Iraq and the MEA region.[1]

Business areas

[edit]

AWI is active in the areas of general construction, industrial and commercial development, real estate development, equipment rental and maintenance and workforce services.[2]

Projects

[edit]

AWI worked on the Al Safa Residential Complex Project, a mixed-use residential development located in Basra, Iraq comprising 2,516 units of apartments and villas.[3]

They also worked on the Samawa Power Plant that is a 250MW simple cycle power plant at the Samawah Industrial Axis.[4]

History

[edit]

AWI was established in 1970 by Iraqi entrepreneur Abdul Mahdi Muslim Tahir Al-Juboori. Early projects included public infrastructure such as the Al-Rafidain Bank Building (1972) and the Music and Ballet School in Baghdad (1974).[5]

Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, AWI played a role in reconstruction efforts. In 2005, Abather Al-Juboori, son of the founder, was appointed CEO. Under his leadership, AWI expanded its operations, forming joint ventures and securing contracts with international clients, including those under LOGCAP programs.[6]

By the 2010s, AWI expanded into engineering and construction, securing contracts with major oil operators such as ExxonMobil, OilServ, and Renaissance Heavy Industries (RHI) for civil works, facility construction, and integrated services in Iraq’s southern oilfields.[7]

In 2020s, AWI launched its industrial development arm and began development of the Basra Economic City and AWI Industrial Complex, marking a shift toward large-scale infrastructure investment. In 2023, the company secured a 1,500 MW investment license from the Ministry of Electricity, leading to the ongoing construction of a 250 MW power station in Samawa.[8]

Global Presence

[edit]

AWI maintains a significant presence in Iraq, with offices in Baghdad, Erbil, and Basra. Internationally, the company has offices in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Xi'an, China.[9]
