964 Media is an Iraqi digital media organization that focuses on local news and human-interest stories from across the country. The platform, which publishes in Kurdish (Sorani), Arabic, and English, aims to provide a platform for underrepresented voices and bridge societal divides by "unveiling hidden stories."[2][3][4] It was founded by the Iraqi journalist Hiwa Osman.[5][6]

History

[edit]

964 Media was launched on March 3, 2023,[2] founded by Iraqi journalist and media commentator Hiwa Osman.[7][8][9][10][11][12] The organization was established with the stated aim of filling a gap in the Iraqi media landscape, which is often characterized by political polarization.

According to its founding mission, the platform focuses on local perspectives and human-interest stories that are frequently overlooked by larger media outlets.[2] The goal is to "bridge divides" within Iraqi society by providing a space for underrepresented voices.[8] The name "964" is a reference to +964, the country calling code for Iraq, reflecting its focus on the entire country.[8]

Platform and content

[edit]

964 Media operates across multiple digital platforms to reach its audience. Its primary distribution channels are its main trilingual website and dedicated mobile applications for both iOS and Android devices.[2] The organization also maintains an active presence on major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok, to disseminate its content and engage with users.[8][13]

The editorial content covers a wide spectrum of formats. In addition to daily news, 964 Media produces in-depth analytical reports, human-interest stories, video documentaries, and photo galleries. The platform also develops audio content, including podcasts, as part of its strategy to cover diverse topics and appeal to different audiences.[2][14][15]

Reception

[edit]

As of July 2025, in-depth third-party coverage of 964 Media is limited. The organization's launch was noted in press release aggregators, which highlighted its mission to focus on local Iraqi stories.[2][1]
