8 Degrees was an American nu metal band from Topeka, Kansas, active from 1995 to 2001. The band initially formed under the name Piss in late 1995, later changing their name to 8 Degrees in early 1997 due to challenges booking shows under their original name.
History
[edit]The band was formed in Kansas in 1995 under the provocative name Piss. Due to difficulties in booking performances under this name, they changed it to 8 Degrees in 1997. The band's early music was characterized by a blend of heavy metal and hip-hop elements, aligning with the nu metal genre that was emerging during that period.
8 Degrees gained regional recognition through energetic live performances and participation in local music competitions. Notably, they won the Warped Tour Battle of the Bands at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas, in June 1998, and 98.9 The Rock's 3rd Annual Battle of the Bands at America's Pub in Kansas City, Missouri, in July 1998. These victories led to performances at prominent events, including the Warped Tour '98 in Burcham Park, Lawrence, Kansas, on July 17, 1998.
In 1998, the band released their debut album, Swam the Waters, which sold over 2,000 copies. Their second album, Series of Moments, followed in 2000, selling approximately 4,000 copies.
During this period, 8 Degrees shared stages with notable acts such as Clutch, Sevendust, Stuck Mojo, and Ultraspank, further solidifying their presence in the nu metal scene.
In January 2001, seeking broader opportunities, 8 Degrees relocated to California. Later that year, in November, they rebranded as Fever Pitch, marking a shift away from their rapcore roots towards a different musical direction.
Musical style and influences
[edit]8 Degrees' music was emblematic of the nu metal genre, combining aggressive guitar riffs with elements of hip-hop and alternative metal. Their sound featured down-tuned guitars, syncopated rhythms, and a blend of rapped and sung vocals, reflecting the stylistic characteristics of nu metal prevalent in the late 1990s.
