On the morning of February 24, 2025, a SAF Ilyushin Il-76 was shot down by RSF troops and crashed. All seven occupants are believed to have died in the crash.[1][2][3]
Backround
[edit]This accident is the secount time an Ilyushin Il-76 was shootdown by the RSF duricng the sudan war, last accident was on 21 October 2024. This accident is unique, among other things, because it is unusual for an Il-76 to drop bombs, this is quite possible, even if it happens rarely. Only one day after this accident an Antonov An-26 aircraft also owned by the sudanese air force crashed and killed 46 people. These two accidents are heavy losses for the Sudanese military, as it owns only a few of the two types of aircraft.[4]

The aircraft and crew
[edit]
The plane is an Ilyushin Il-76, as evidenced by some photos of the crash site on the internet. According to the RSF, the aircraft was said to have been owned by the SAF. Some sources claim the plane dropped bombs over the city. The crew consisted of seven Sudanese citizens including Major General Pilot Abu Al-Qasim Ali and Major General Osama Muhammad Ahmed Abdusalam. The aircraft is probably the Ilyushin Il-76TD with the registration ST-AZZ (MSN: 1023408265), as it is the only Il-76 of the SAF. It is still unclear from where to where the plane was travelling, but it probably took off from Kadugli or Khartoum.[2][3][5]
Incident
[edit]The Aircraft was hit by a missile fired by the RSF, after it reportedly dropped bombs on the city. It then reportedly caught fire and crashed in a remote area where it burned out. The remains were then visited and looted by local residents.[1][6]O ther sources say that it crashed as a result of overweight.[7][8]
