The shooting at the Nossa Senhora do Belo Ramo State School was the deadliest school shooting in Minas Gerais, in terms of the number of victims, before being surpassed by the shooting at a kindergarten in Claro dos Porções, where a man killed his own son, injured his stepfather, and then killed himself, in 2023.[3]

Background

[edit]

The Nossa Senhora do Belo Ramo State School is a secondary school located in the Nova Granada neighborhood in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The school serves about 800 middle and high school students. And the school was the scene of a third shooting in less than a year. Employees and neighbors of the institution reported that it is common for students to be armed.[4]

Shooting

[edit]

At around 7 am, three armed teenagers invaded the Nossa Senhora do Belo Ramo State School, jumping over the wall, looking for a student who was part of the rival group. The three teenagers went to the second floor of the school and found a group of students talking. The teenagers shot at one of the students who was the target of the shooters, Warley Pinto, 16, who, according to witnesses, was scared and anxious.[5][4][6] He was hit and was also armed with a .38 caliber revolver. He returned fire at the classroom door and hit a 17-year-old student, Daniel Santos Camargo. He was hit by four shots in the abdomen, arm and right shoulder. After hitting Camargo, the teenagers who shot Pinto fled. Pinto began shooting again, hitting two other students, Rosilene Cristina Moura, 15, and Renata Ferreira Campos, 17, both in the feet. During the shooting, students who were in the school ducked, fearing they would be hit by the shots.[4] Pinto was arrested after the shooting.

Aftermach

[edit]

After the shooting, Warley Pinto was arrested and taken to the Child and Adolescent Guidance and Protection Police Station. Classes were suspended due to the shooting. After the crime, the police searched the students at the attacked school. A meeting was scheduled between parents, staff, and teachers, and the military police promised to keep 24-hour surveillance on the school. Due to the shooting, the students did not go to school, and parents of about 20 students asked to be transferred due to insecurity, and staff refused to return to the school.[4][7]

Victims

[edit]

Initially, it was reported that four students were hit in the shootout. They were rescued and taken to the João 23 Hospital, including the shooter himself.[2] Two girls were shot in the feet, Rosilene Cristina Moura, 15, and Renata Ferreira Campos, 17. The injured girls were released on the afternoon of the same day as the shooting.[4] The shooter, Warley Pinto, did not suffer serious injuries. He was rescued and later detained. The student, Daniel Santos Camargo, 17, was hit by four shots in the abdomen, arm, and shoulder and was described as being in serious condition. Santos was hospitalized and underwent surgery but died on day 23, 6 days after being shot.[8][9] Santos was buried in the Bosque da Esperança Cemetery.
