Dorémart (formerly known as Dorémon Supermarket) is a retail chain of Malaysia supermarket, owned by Doremart Sdn. Bhd., Sarawak.
History
[edit]Dorémart was founded in 2015 by the entrepreneurial couple, Hii Kah Hock (Chinese: 許家福) and Wong Su Ping (Chinese: 王淑萍). The name Dorémart was inspired by Hii's favourite childhood Japanese anime and manga series, Doraemon by Fujiko Fujio, as well as the series's widespread popularity within the Malaysian community. Elements of the supermarket's design were influenced by the character designs of Doraemon.[1][2]
During 2005, Hii and Wong began their business as a small grocery store of the rural area of Sri Aman, Sarawak. Thanks to the community's supports, the first outlet, named Dorémon Superstore, was established in the exact location ten years later. By the late 2010s, due to significant shifts in the retail landscape in Sarawak caused by increased market competition (red ocean strategy), Dorémon Superstore experienced extreme sales decline. With the emotional and wealth supports from the department managers, Hii decided to transit the retail chain into a diversified supermarket model.[1][2]
Prior to 2018, the chain was rebranded as Dorémon Supermarket. In 2018 and 2021, following the discussions among the department managers, and also the chain's official Facebook page public announcement with poll aimed at enhancing the overall shopping experience and avoiding potential copyright issues, the brand was officially renamed as Dorémart.[1][3][2]
On January 2020, five Doraemon's main characters statues (Doraemon, Nobita Nobi, Shizuka Minamoto, Takeshi "Gian" Goda and Suneo Honekawa) were erected near Dorémart Sarikei, becoming a small attraction among the community.[4] Followed by June 2020, Dorémart application was published in Google Apps store.
