The Dismantling Racism and Hate Act is an act of the General Assembly of Nova Scotia relating to the reduction of racist policies and practices in government.[1]

Legislative passage

[edit]

An all-party committee, consisting of seven members, developed the legislation.[2]

The legislation was criticized by opposition MLAs who sought to amend the legislation.[3] The Nova Scotia government refused to allow amendments to the legislation, on the basis that points being addressed by the amendments were better addressed in the strategy required under the act.[3]

Provisions

[edit]

The bill establishes a definition of hate and requires that the provincial government develop a strategy and framework for health equity equity.[4] Municipalities, colleges and universities are also required to develop their own strategies.[4]

Implementation

[edit]

In September 2022, the provincial government released a strategy as required under the act.[5]
