Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana PVSM, AVSM, YSM, SM is a serving general officer of the Indian Army. He currently serves as the Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN), having assumed command effective 1 June 2025.[1]

Military career

Rana was commissioned into the 10th Garhwal Rifles on 19 December 1987.[1][2] He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and a postgraduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. Rana is also an alumnus of the National Defence College, New Delhi, the Centre for National Defence Studies, Madrid, and the National Defense University, United States. He took his doctorate on the defence modernisation of China.[1]

During his career, Rana has served with the Indian Military Training Team and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. He has commanded an infantry brigade and division in the Eastern Sector and subsequently led IV Corps (Gajraj Corps) along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).[1] He has also served as an instructor at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, at the College of Defence Management, Secunderabad; and with the Higher Command Wing, Army War College, Mhow.[1] His staff appointments include those of a brigade major of an independent armoured brigade, Deputy Director General Staff Duties, Brigadier Military Intelligence (East), Provost Marshal, and Director General Staff Duties at Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army).[1]

His most recent appointment prior to taking over as CINCAN was as Director General, Defence Intelligence Agency, making history as the first Chief of Defence Intelligence to be elevated to the rank of Commander-in-Chief, reflecting the importance of defence intelligence and jointmanship.[1]

Awards and decorations

Rana has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM, 2025),[3] the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM, 2021),[4] the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM, 2015) and both the Sena Medal (SM, 1993) and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card for gallantry in Kashmir.[5][6]
