On 26 May 2025, police began investigating the accident that killed Argo Ericko Achfandi, a student at the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, on Saturday, 24 May 2025.[3] One of the things being investigated is the speed of the car that hit Achfandi, which was driven by a UGM student from a different faculty.[3] This was revealed by the Head of the Sleman Police Traffic Unit, Adjunct Commissioner Mulyanto, when interviewed in Sleman, on Monday, 26 May.[3] "We are still investigating the speed, including whether it was high or not. Because here there are still differences between the driver's statement and the witness's statement," he said.[3] Mulyanto said the incident occurred on Jalan Palagan Tentara Pelajar, Ngaglik District, Sleman, on Saturday morning, at around 01.00 AM.[3] The motorbike ridden by Achfandi was traveling from south to north.[3] Right behind him, a car driven by Christiano Pengarapenta Pangidahen Tarigan, a student at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University, was also driving.[3] Achfandi then intended to turn back south.[3] However, due to the allegedly short distance between the two vehicles, a collision occurred.[3] After hitting Achfandi's motorbike, the car then swerved to the right and hit another car that was stopped at the side of the road.[3] As a result of the incident, Achfandi died at the scene and was then taken to Bhayangkara Hospital, Sleman.[3] Tarigan did not suffer any injuries.[3] "We have examined the car driver and a number of witnesses. CCTV cameras (around the location) have also been checked," said Mulyanto.[3] However, he said, until now his party has not detained or named the car driver as a suspect.[3] This is because the case is still being investigated.[3] Even so, Tarigan is required to report.[3] Mulyanto said, one way to find out is from examining the brake marks at the location.[3] The car driven by Tarigan was known to have braked after the collision.[3] "We can calculate how fast the car was (from the brake marks)," he said.[3] Mulyanto suggested that the driver may had been distracted at the time of the crash.[3] The car driver's urine has been tested and was declared negative for alcohol or drug consumption.[3] The lighting conditions at the location of the incident were also sufficient and the weather was not rainy.[3] Mulyanto added that the police will handle this case professionally and transparently.[3] He hopes that all parties will not be provoked by information that is not necessarily true.[3]
On Monday afternoon, a number of officials from the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University and the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University came to the Sleman Police.[3] They met with Mulyanto for about 30 minutes.[3] After the meeting, officials from both faculties were unwilling to provide information to reporters.[3] However, through its official website, as quoted on Monday afternoon, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University expressed deep condolences for the death of Argo Ericko Achfandi, a student of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University in an accident.[3]
"The Head of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and to the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University," the statement read.[3] The Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University has fully handed over the handling of this incident to the authorities and fully supports a fair investigation in accordance with applicable legal provisions.[3] "In this case, the Faculty of Economics and Business has established communication and coordination with the Rectorate and the Faculty of Law of Gadjah Mada University," the statement said.[3]
On 27 May, Tarigan was named a suspect after the police conducted a case conference.[4] "Investigators from the Sleman Police this afternoon conducted a case conference related to the case and have raised the status from investigation to investigation followed by the determination of a suspect," said Head of Public Relations of the DIY Police, Senior Commissioner Ihsan, when met at the DIY Police Headquarters, as reported by detikJogja, on Tuesday, 27 May.[4] Ihsan said the suspect was the driver of the BMW car with the initials CPP.[4] The determination was based on the results of the case conference conducted by police investigators.[4] "The suspect is the driver of the BMW car with the initials CPP, who is also a student and still attends the same campus as the victim," he said.[4] He continued that the police have not yet detained the suspect. Investigators will only summon Christiano for questioning as a suspect followed by detention.[4]
"We will summon him first," he said.[4]
On 28 May, the police said that the BMW car driven by Tarigan used a fake license plate when it hit Gadjah Mada University student Achfandhi to death.[5] In addition, the police also found more than one license plate from inside Christiano's BMW.[5] This was as stated by the Sleman Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Edy Setyanto Erning Wibowo during the case release at the Sleman Police Headquarters.[5] Wibowo admitted that he did not know for sure when these other plates were used.[5] However, what is clear is that one fake plate was used when the accident occurred.[5]
"Yes, we did find several plates in the car. We don't know when we used them.[5] Yes, what is clear is that at the time of the incident he used an F plate, then it was replaced with a B plate," he said, on Wednesday, 28 May.[5] Wibowo also said that his party did not yet know for sure what the license plates found in the suspect's car were for.[5] What is certain is that there was more than one license plate found in the BMW.[5] "There are several plates (of vehicles) there. I don't know what the plates are for, I don't know. But there are several plates on the vehicle," said Wibowo.[5]
Wibowo revealed that someone changed the car's license plate without the officer's knowledge.[5] The replacement was done when the car was secured.[5]
"When the vehicle was secured, without the officer's knowledge, someone changed the license plate using the license plate number B 1442 NAC," he said.[5]
The vehicle plate replacement process was carried out in the Ngaglik Police area. This is because the BMW vehicle was placed behind the police station in an open space.[5]
"We took the CCTV, he changed it inside, because the car was parked behind the police station there, they gathered there suddenly changed it without our knowledge and permission.[5] There was CCTV, all of it," he explained.[5] Currently, the suspect Tarigan has been detained by the police.[5] The suspect is threatened with Article 310 paragraph 4 of Law No. 22 of 2009 concerning LLAJ with a maximum prison sentence of 6 years and/or a maximum fine of IDR 12 million.[5]
The evidence that was secured was a Honda CRV motor vehicle with police number AB 1623 CR along with STNK, 1 SIM A sheet in the name of TNR, a BMW car with police number B 1442 NAC along with STNK, 1 SIM A sheet in the name of CPP, a Honda Vario motorcycle with police number B 3373 PCG along with STNK and 1 SIM C sheet in the name of AAA.[5]
On the same day, Sleman Police investigators questioned Achfandi's mother at the Faculty of Law campus of Gadjah Mada University.[6] The location of the statement-taking at the faculty was requested by Achfandi's mother.[6]
On the same day, the Faculty of Law of Gadjah Mada University denied any intimidation against Achfandi's family.[7] This was confirmed by the Deputy Dean III of the Faculty of Law of Gadjah Mada University, Heribertus Jaka Triyana, in his statement at the Faculty of Law of Gadjah Mada University in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, on Wednesday, 28 May.[7]
"There was no (intimidation). We confirmed that there was none," he said to the media crew, quoted from the KompasTV YouTube video.[7]
He also stated that no family members of the perpetrators had visited the victim's family.[7]
In addition, Triyana said that the victim's family had received information from the police because there had been a lot of conflicting news previously.[7] "The clarification has been conveyed and the family can understand," he explained.[7]
Furthermore, he said that the Faculty of Law of Gadjah Mada University will follow the next process from law enforcement officers.[7]
Then for the victim's family, Triyana stated that his party provided assistance.[7] "On the orders of the Dean, we accompany the victim and the victim's family to carry out legal assistance, the rights of the victim and his family," he said.[7] Triyana said, the UGM Faculty of Law through the Center for Consultation and Legal Aid of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University will assist the legal process of this case until completion.[7]
"We, the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, support and encourage this process to run as fairly as possible, as much as possible so that justice and also benefits for the victim and family will be achieved," he said.[7]
Triyana said that his party had formed a legal team involving three advocates from the Center for Consultation and Legal Aid of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University.[7] Not only legal assistance, Triyana also stated that his party also helped with psychological assistance for the victim's family.[7]
He said that the victim's family hopes that the truth of this case will be revealed.[7] "What is the hope of the victim's mother, is to be able to find the real truth," said Triyana.[7] In addition, he said, the family submitted this case to the legal process, and cooperated with the implementation of the next processes.[7]
When asked about the family path to this case, Triyana admitted that it had not been decided.[7]
"But what is clear is that the family accepts the good intentions of the perpetrator.[7] For the future, we will see after this process is underway and the psychological condition of the victim's mother is indeed not yet able to carry out that," he explained.[7]
On 2 June 2025, the Sleman District Attorney's Office (Kejari) received the case files for the traffic accident.[8] Head of the Sleman District Attorney's Office for General Crimes, Agung Wijayanto, who was met in his office, explained that after receiving the files, the District Attorney's Office had seven days to examine the files and then take a stance.[8]
"It is possible that the Prosecutor's Office needs additional information so that the files are returned to the investigator.[8] If it is complete, it will be declared P-21 or complete and then it will be followed by the transfer of the files and suspects," he said.[8]
After that, he continued, the complete case files will also be followed by the transfer to the Sleman District Court.[8] According to him, the files submitted by the investigator will later become the basis for the Public Prosecutor to prepare the indictment in the trial.[8]
Wijayanto further said that the files received from the investigator also contained who the suspects were and the articles they were accused of.[8] The suspect is Tarigan with the article suspected of being Article 310 paragraph 4 of Law Number 22/2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation (LLAJ).[8]
On that occasion, Wijayanto explained that before receiving the files, the Sleman District Attorney's Office had received a Notification Letter of Commencement of Investigation (SPDP) from the Sleman Police.[8] This SPDP, he said, was received on May 28.[8]
When asked about there any other cases related to the collision, Wijayanto answered that until now the case files sent by the police only contain the case related to the fatal collision according to the SPDP and the examination files.[8] Meanwhile, regarding the replacement of the license plate or the discovery of a fake license plate on the BMW car used by the suspect, the District Attorney's Office has not received the case files so far.[8]
On 2 July 2025, Sleman Police have officially named 3 people as suspects in the alleged replacement of the license plate of Tarigan's BMW.[9] Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Sleman Police AKP Wahyu Agha Ari Septyan said that the three people named as suspects have the initials IV, WI and NR.[9] The three are considered to be involved in the attempt to replace Christiano's BMW license plate based on the investigation and inquiry process.[9] "They have (had suspect status) since a week or two ago," said Septyan when contacted on Wednesday, 2 July.[9] According to him, one of the three suspects was the person who replaced Christiano's BMW license plate, while the other two gave instructions.[9]
Septyan said the suspects were ordered to replace Christiano's BMW license plate, but did not explain where the order came from.[9]
"What is clear is that we have named three suspects," said Septyan firmly.[9]
The three suspects were charged with Article 221 paragraph (1) 2 of the Criminal Code concerning the crime of obstructing the legal process, in this case the alleged obscuration of evidence.[9] Despite being suspects, the three were not detained because the threat of imprisonment is less than five years.[9]
Sleman Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Edy Setianto Erning Wibowo previously explained that Christiano's BMW license plate was replaced by a person with the initials IV when the vehicle was parked as evidence in the Ngaglik Police area, Saturday (24/5) morning.[9] IV moved on the orders of WI and NR, two of Christiano's acquaintances.[9] IV replaced it without the police's knowledge, but his actions were recorded by surveillance cameras or CCTV at the location.[9] Now the police have questioned IV, WI and NR as witnesses for the alleged act of obscuring evidence.[9]
"The motive and intention was so that it would not be known before and during the incident (accident) that the car was using a fake license plate, which was F (F 1206)," said Wibowo at the Sleman Police Headquarters, on Friday, 30 May.[9]
At that time, Wibowo stated that the police were still investigating to investigate the person who gave the order to these three people.[9] He also emphasized that no police officers were involved in this case.[9]
Reactions
[edit]Gadjah Mada University expressed its condolences on 26 May 2025.[10] University Secretary Andi Sandi expressed his condolences and invited the[11] entire academic community to make this incident a moment of collective reflection.[10] "All university leaders express our deepest condolences to the mother and sister of the deceased, and we hope that this incident will be a reminder of human limitations before the will of the Almighty.".[10] In a press conference held online, Sandi explained that the legal handling process for the accident case is currently under the authority of the Sleman Police, especially the Traffic Unit.[10] Gadjah Mada University ensures that all related parties, both from the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics and Business, provide full support for the investigation.[10] Coordination continues to be carried out by the university leadership together with the two faculties to ensure openness of information and compliance with applicable laws.[10] "We will continue to coordinate with various parties to follow up on the handling that is being carried out at the Sleman Police," he explained.[10] Sandi emphasized that UGM will not intervene in any form in the ongoing legal process.[10] Regarding the visit of the Faculty, Directorate of Student Affairs (Ditmawa), and K5L to the police station, it was solely done to find out the progress of the case handling and ensure that all stages are running according to procedure.[10] Even the university and faculty also ensured that there was no guarantee or special treatment for anyone involved in this case.[10]"We fully hand over the investigation and inquiry process to the police and are committed to monitoring so that everything runs according to the provisions," he said.[10] In addition, the university has also established active communication with the victim's family and prepared assistance steps.[10] Andi Sandi said that emotional, administrative, and logistical support had been provided, including when the deceased's body was released.[10] Meanwhile, for the families of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, communication is still being attempted along with the ongoing legal process.[10] "We have coordinated with both faculties, and all steps taken are always in the spirit of supporting law-abiding handling and respecting the feelings of all parties affected," he said.[10] Regarding the narrative that has developed on social media regarding the social background of one of the students involved, Gadjah Mada University emphasized that the institution has never and will not differentiate handling based on social status.[10] Sandi said that every process must be based on the principle of equality before the law and transparency in its implementation.[10] Internal monitoring continues to be carried out to ensure that public accountability is maintained.[10]"We have no intention, let alone action, to influence the legal process; it is entirely the police's domain and we fully respect it," he said.[10] So far, Sandi said, there has been no official communication from the family of the student from the Faculty of Economics and Business to the university regarding the possibility of mediation or other steps.[10] However, Gadjah Mada University stated that the resolution path, if any, will remain within the domain of the police as the legitimate legal authority.[10] The university will also not take any steps that can be interpreted as an attempt to influence the course of the investigation.[10] "Any process, including the possibility of mediation, is part of the authority of law enforcement officers, and we remain consistent in not intervening," Sandi said.[10] Responding to journalists' questions regarding sanctions or revocation of the status of students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Gadjah Mada University who were involved as perpetrators who hit the victim to death, Andi Sandi stated that institutional action could only be taken after there was a permanent legal decision.[10] Gadjah Mada University upholds the principle of presumption of innocence and will act based on applicable academic regulations, especially student code of conduct.[10] Disciplinary measures will be taken according to the official mechanisms in force on campus.[10] "We are waiting for the legal process to complete, and if there is a final and binding decision, then we will follow up according to the rules and regulations in force at Gadjah Mada University," he concluded.[10]
The leadership of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Gadjah Mada University has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and to the Faculty of Law at Gadjah Mada University.[12] The faculty has fully handed over the handling of this incident to the authorities, and fully supports efforts for a fair investigation in accordance with applicable legal provisions.[12] In this case, the faculty has also established communication and coordination with the rectorate and the faculty of law.[12]
The perpetrator, Christiano Pengarapenta Pangidahen Tarigan, who is a functionary in the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association at Gadjah Mada University, was deactivated on 25 May.[13] "The organization also expresses its deepest condolences for the passing of the late Argo Ericko Achfandi (student of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, class of 2024)," wrote the official statement from the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association, Gadjah Mada University.[13]
The day after the accident, on 25 May, X social media was abuzz with the hashtag #JusticeForArgo.[14] X users urged the police to be transparent in handling the case.[14] Most called for justice for the victim and suspected the hit-and-run driver was driving under the influence of alcohol.[14] However, the Sleman Police denied the accusation based on the results of the perpetrator's urine test.[14] The police have not yet detained the perpetrator on the grounds that the investigation is ongoing.[14] The hashtag #JusticeforArgo that went viral on social media was initially created by Achfandi's friends who felt that this case needed to be monitored.[1] The reason is, the Sleman Police who handled this accident decided not to detain Tarigan because he was proven not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol from a urine test.[1] Achfandi's friends through a thread on X actively shared developments in this case, including allegations that Tarigan's father who is suspected of being a high-ranking official in a large company has prepared many legal counsel to close this case amicably.[1] "Achfandi's mother said, the father of the person who hit him is already in Jogja with a lot of lawyers, many things are being twisted," wrote a screenshot of a conversation uploaded on the X account.[1] Achfandi's friends felt the need to make this case viral by asking for help from netizens to monitor it on social media because they were afraid that this would end without the justice that should be upheld.[1]
On 26 May, The Justicia Student Council of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, held a joint prayer for Achfandi.[2] The Head of the Justicia Student Council of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, Radea Basukarna Prawira Yudha, said that the joint prayer and scattering of flowers were a form of support and solidarity for Achfandi.[2] The joint prayer took place in front of the statue of the Goddess of Justice in the yard of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University.[2] He also invited all members of Gadjah Mada University to join in the prayer and wear black as a symbol of mourning, and also provided a platform for anyone to speak about law enforcement in the case.[2] The Justicia Student Council has communicated with the victim's mother and supports the joint prayer. "We have scheduled the victim's mother to join via the Zoom application," said Yudha.[2]
On 27 May, Member of Commission III of the House of Representatives, Abdullah, highlighted the case of the death of a student of the Faculty of Law, Gadjah Mada University, Achfandi, who was hit by a fellow student of Gadjah Mada University with a BMW car, after the incident occurred last weekend.[15] He reminded that the legal handling of the case must be free from intervention and must be based on justice, not social status.[15] Moreover, said Abdullah, this case has received public attention on social media because it is suspected that the handling of the case was not transparent.[15] The reason is, the driver of the BMW car who is a student of Gadjah Mada University in the Faculty of Economics and Business, Tarigan, is said to have important influence.[15] The social status of Tarigan's father is also linked to the handling of the case.[15] "The handling of Achfandi's case must side with justice, not social status," said Abdullah.[15] He also highlighted the many netizens who doubt the credibility of the handling of the case of Achfandi's death.[15] This is because the police did not detain Tarigan so it was considered odd.[15] To stop the assumptions that continue to develop in the public, Abdullah, who is a member of the DPR's Law Enforcement Commission, urged the police handling this case to provide clarification.[15] "And the police must answer all public questions that are considered odd," he said.[15]
