On August 18, 2024, Achazia James, a 15-year-old girl from Fort Road, Antigua and Barbuda, was found dead and mutilated in several parts of her body on the beach. The person responsible for her death has never been identified.

Background

Born in Fort Road, James was the youngest of two children and attended the Princess Margaret School.[1][2]

Investigations

James’ body was discovered on August 18, 2024 just after 6 a.m. at Runaway Beach by beach goers who immediately informed the authorities.[1][3] Her dead body held multiple chop wounds, and her hand was severed at the wrist. Parts of her left ear were also mutilated.[4] It was reported that the area had clear signs of a violent attack. The investigations also revealed that the victim was attacked with a sharp instrument such as a machete or cutlass.[1] Police reported she was last seen alive at around 3 am on Sunday, August 18th.[5]

Achazia James was identified as Antigua and Barbuda's 10th homicide victim of the year.[6] Her mother, who was pregnant at the time, was taken to hospital in shock.[1]

Several suspects, including some of the victim's close friends, have been interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation. No arrests were made in connection with the case.[7] The government included Scotland Yard to help with investigations. Nothing was found to lead to the responsible of her death.[8]

Public reaction

With other unresolved murder and disappearance cases in Antigua and Barbuda, the death of Acahzia caused widespread public outrage. Residents and even those abroad called for justice for the teenage girl.[9]

Online petitions were also launched calling the police to expedite their investigations. A candlelight vigil was also held in her honor on September 7, 2024.[10]

On April 28, 2025, with a heartfelt appeal to the authorities, Achazia James' mother returned to demand justice for her daughter and for those responsible for her brutal murder to be identified.[11]

Funeral

Achazia James was buried on October 18, 2024.[12]
