Davidson Oturu was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, to the family of Dr. and Dr. (Mrs.) Mark Oturu. He attended King’s College Lagos and obtained his Senior School Certificate in 1996. Upon graduation, he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, Oyo State for his university education, and obtained a Bachelors of Law (LLB) degree and a BL from the Nigerian Law School. He then proceeded to the University of Cumbria for a Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Business Law and an MBA from Queen Mary University of London.
Career
[edit]Oturu began his career as an Associate at Matrix Solicitors, a Nigerian law firm. He later became a Partner at AELEX , a top-tier Nigerian law firm, where he led the Intellectual Property, Startups, Innovation, and Technology Practice[1] .
He was appointed to the committee set up by the Nigeria Exchange Group[2] , chaired by Ade Bajomo, which was tasked with creating a roadmap for the integration of financial technology (Fintech) in Nigeria’s capital market.[3] The committee's report was finalised in August 2019[4] and was instrumental in the Securities and Exchange Commission issuing guidelines on cryptocurrency, virtual assets, crowdfunding and other emerging Fintech securities in Nigeria's capital market.[5][6]
Oturu was further appointed by Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to lead the legal team that drafted Nigeria's Startup Act[7][8] and was subsequently named to the National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship to drive the Act’s implementation.[9]
In 2023, Oturu joined Nubia Capital,[10] a venture capital firm, as a general partner. In this role, he oversees strategic investments in tech startups in Africa.
Publications and media
[edit]In November 2024, Oturu published Fintech Law and Practice in Nigeria, the first comprehensive legal text in Nigeria dedicated to fintech.[11][12][13] The book was launched at the University of Aberdeen during an event featuring scholars and industry experts, earning positive reviews for its depth and relevance.[14]
Oturu has been featured in interviews with NBC News,[15] Yahoo News[16] and the American Bar Association's International Section.[17]
Philanthropy
[edit]In 2022, Oturu established the Davidson Oturu Law School Scholarship Foundation, aimed at supporting academically outstanding but financially disadvantaged students who cannot afford the tuition at the Nigerian Law School.[18][19]
