A former collegiate linebacker, Gibson brings over a decade of coaching experience, including roles at the college and professional levels. He joined the Vikings staff in 2023.
Coaching career
[edit]Early coaching
[edit]Gibson began his coaching career as a student coach at Dickinson State. In 2015, he served as the program’s special teams coordinator and linebackers coach, helping the Blue Hawks win back-to-back conference championships and reach the NAIA playoffs. Under his leadership, Dickinson State’s defense led the country in interceptions and ranked in the top five in sacks and tackles for loss.[1]
He briefly coached at Wayne State College as a graduate assistant working with cornerbacks and assisting in recruiting, before joining University of Colorado in 2017. Gibson spent three seasons with the Buffaloes, beginning as an intern before rising to graduate assistant.[2] He worked under defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh and helped mentor future All-Pac-12 players including Mustafa Johnson and Terrance Lang.[3]
Michigan State and Southern Illinois
[edit]In 2020, Gibson joined Michigan State University as a special teams analyst. During the 2021 season, the Spartans made significant improvements in special teams play, contributing to an 11–2 season and a win in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. MSU ranked third in the FBS in punt returns and featured standout performances by returner Jayden Reed and punter Bryce Baringer.[4]
In 2022, Gibson served as the special teams coordinator and defensive ends coach at Southern Illinois University. He helped SIU's special teams improve five spots nationally in net punting, while the defense ranked sixth in the FCS in rushing defense and seventh in sacks. DE Richie Hagarty earned First-Team All-Conference honors under Gibson's tutelage.[5]
Minnesota Vikings (2023–present)
[edit]Gibson was hired by the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 as the assistant special teams coach under coordinator Matt Daniels.[6]
In 2024, Gibson also mentored rookie kicker Will Reichard, a sixth-round draft pick who started his career 12-for-12 on field goals and tied for second in Vikings history with eight field goals from 50+ yards. Gibson also helped the unit adapt when DePaola and Reichard went on injured reserve, guiding replacement kicker Parker Romo to an 11-of-12 showing and a perfect debut in Week 10 against Jacksonville.[7]
