The Coat of arms of Menen is the heraldic arms of the West-Flemish city Menen. The weapon was first granted on the 14th of April 1824 and confirmed on the 7th of April 1838.

History

[edit]

The coat of arms of Menen has its origin in the Middle Ages and has strong ties with the heraldry of the nobility in the region around Menen. The earliest mention of the arms descends from the 16th century when Menen was part of the County of Flanders, the arms was seen on multiple official documents, flags and stamps.[1]

The weapon was first granted on the 14th of April 1824, when Belgium and Menen were still under Dutch rule. After the Belgian revolution (1830-1831) was the coat of arms confirmed, on the 7th of April 1838.[1]

The arms of Menen had the wrong colors from 1824 until 1953, the arms was supposed to have red chevrons but the city accidently used black for a century, until the city corrected the colors in 1953. And in 1980 the city changed the crown to a citycrown instead of a princecrown

In 1977, the city of Menen merged with the neigbouring cities Lauwe and Rekkem. But the city continued to use the weapon as a tribute to the rich history and culture of the City?[1][2]
